TARGETING THE WORLD, SIFF HOLDS PROMOTION CAMPAIGN AT BERLINALE

Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) launched the international promotion campaign for its 17th festival (June 14-22) at the Berlinale on February 8.

Over 200 luminaries including Bille August, a jury member at SIFF 2008, as well as film representative of BLIND MASSAGE including director LOU Ye, actor Qin Hao, HUANG Xuan and actress HUANG Lu, attended the event. It is the 7th consecutive year for SIFF to hold its promotional event at Berlinale, the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival.

SIFF managing director FU Wenxia unveiled the festival\'s plans for a ground-breaking innovation in the restoration of classic films. The project will be in collaboration with Italian company L\'IMMAGINE RITROVATA and will use the latest 4K restoration technique to restore TWO STAGE SISTERS. This film, a masterpiece by XIE Jing, is one of the most acclaimed in the history of Chinese cinema. It is also the first color film to be restored by SIFF\'s restoration project which started in 2011 and is funded by Jaeger LeCoultre. In the past three years, six of Chinese cinema\'s most significant filmic artworks have been rehabilitated. The restored version of TWO STAGE SISTERS is expected to be played during the coming festival.

The restoration project, in partnership with the world renowned luxury brand Jaeger LeCoultre, has successfully restored such classic titles as The Spring River Flows East, 8000 miles Cloud and Moon, Cross Road and Two for the Road. It is the first time in China that the fund for film restoration is raised by a world respected brand.

In addition to the restoration project, SIFF will also launch a series of policies to attract films to sign up for its Golden Goblet award and Asian New Talent Award. SIFF will also make efforts to expand its film market. Online applications are now open on the official website
www.siff.com.

In the 20 years since its establishment in 1993, SIFF has played an irreplaceable role in China’s film industry. In its 20th anniversary in 2013, SIFF received 1,655 feature submissions from 112 countries and regions; 306 movies were selected for its panorama exhibition program and played on 35 screens in 26 cinemas. Around 300,000 moviegoers watched the films during the 9-day festival.

But SIFF did more than show world class movies in China. It also drove the business of movie making and film exhibition between China and the rest of the world through its SIFF Mart, which is consist of SIFF Market and SIFF Project. The SIFF Mart registered
2,718 buyers from 106 countries and regions and 29 projects were selected for investment development from 224 signed-up candidates.

SIFF is also a place for world film leaders to share their insight and wisdom. Every year, the SIFFORUM invites over 100 eminent film professionals to participate in about 10 seminars designed to help participants better understand the industry.

As one of the youngest but most promising film festivals in the world, SIFF never stops in its efforts to find new opportunities. It was the first festival to set up a Mobile SIFF category which fosters the development of a new business model for young film talents who want to take advantage of new media.

“The growing SIFF is highly related to the booming film market of China,” said FU Wenxia. China\'s box office in 2013 was RMB 21.769 billion, reflecting growth of 27.5% compared to 2012. The domestic film box office accounted for RMB 12.767 billion while the rest was shared by foreign film producers. The number of cinemas in China is increasing rapidly, with 5,077 new screens in 2013 taking the total to 18,195l.

“It’s a life time opportunity for all and SIFF is the gateway to China,” said FU.
