The SIFFORUM of the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival will take place from June 14 to 19, 2009. With the message of “Chinese Approaches with Universal Values”, the SIFFORUM will consist of 12 seminars in four sections, including “President Lecture", "Keynote Seminar", "Film Roundtable" and "Master Class", in the hope of setting up a platform for industry people to exchange and cooperate, and providing a vision for industry development.


Part One: President Lecture
Being initiated by SIFF, President Lecture is specifically designed for the jury president who is regarded as the spiritual leader of the event and represents the interpretation and cognition of the prevailing cinema. The section will provide a platform for the jury president to share his perspective of cinema with industry professionals and amateurs.

Part Two: Keynote Seminar
The major element of the seminars is to gather industry expertise to have brainstorms about the hot topics of the industry. In the context of the global financial crisis of 2008, Chinese film market has, nevertheless, risen up against the downturn and aroused universal attention. Is this growing market going to be the new point of growth of the world cinema? This year’s Keynote Seminar will look at the challenges of Chinese film industry, which is now undergoing continuous expansion, from three aspects: interaction between market and productivity, capital operation mechanism of creative industry, and strategies for Chinese-foreign co-production with different budgets.

Part Three: Film Roundtable
Designed to provide dialogue opportunities in equality, Film Roundtable focuses on professional operations and practices, sharing instructive experiences with the topic “Multi Approaches for Asian Regional Cooperation”. At the same time, it allows the participants to discuss film concepts and creative trends with insight on subjects like “Heritage and Deconstruction of New Wave”, “Special Perspective of Women’s Films”, and “Creative Choice of Commerce and Standpoint”. This section is designed to provide the most open platform for industry and content improvement.

Part Four: Master Class
This year\'s Master Class will be an occasion for living masters to pay homage to the late master and his epoch, under the name of "a retrospect of director Xie Jin". It is also to train the masters-to-be with tailored session on financing and production of short films, and to get Quincy Jones to voice his perspective of film and music. Master Class aims to provide as many opportunities as possible for young talents from different countries to have conversation with masters.

Film making is a complicated endeavor, particularly in modern society where film production tends to get involved in more and more territories and channels of financing and marketing. After all these, film content itself seems to have been ignored to some extent. However, Danny Boyle, the jury president of this edition, has been renowned for his concern for reality and solicitude for life. He has set up a new sample for the world industry with his formula of low budget and high quality.

Keynote SeminarI. Made in China: What Kind of Films Does the Domestic Market Want?

The year 2008 grossed a box office of RMB4.3 billion and cropped over 400 feature productions, which overshadowed all other industries. It seems that the golden decade of Chinese cinema is approaching. Well, have we got the market prepared? Particularly as most of the 406 feature productions last year were not theatrically released, we have every reason to raise the questions: How does a healthy market digest films of multi genre and different budgets? How will the creative resources and enthusiasm face up with market choice and challenge? Is it necessary that all creative resources be transformed into productivity? How can we keep the market demand and creative power in balance? And how long will it take for medium/low budget films to reach the market? This session may serve as wind vane for the coming golden decade of Chinese cinema.

Keynote Seminar II. The Soft Power: Financial Innovation Expansion

With increasing investment modes and growing production sizes, there has been much room left to raise and enhance the industry in this country. In the U.S where the world\'s most matured industry exists, the mode of financing in east coast and filming in west coast has been prevailing for decades. In
UK, government provides fund for creative industry which enables London to be the world\'s creative industry center and largest shooting location. And this has in turn stimulated the city\'s growth. Apart from them, the Hong Kong SAR government has been continuously supportive to local film industry in various ways. The rapid growth of mainland film industry has presented a great demand for financing channels, funds and financial products. Unfortunately, such services are not available yet in the local creative industry. Where is the second "New York" for Chinese film industry? Will it be Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong? Or simply other city? This section is supposed to help the local industry as well as the metros, which have the intention to support the creative industry, to work out the future landscape of financial creation and management.

Looking back to the year 2008, people would reckon that it was an ordeal for all industries across the world. Nevertheless, the Chinese box office incredibly enjoyed a 30% growth last year. Being the major part of Chinese domestic cinema, co-production film has been playing a key role in the local cinema landscape Those who grossed over hundred-million-yuan box office in 2008 were all co-produced. Chinese cinema boasts the most potential talents and resources, which have aroused great interests from overseas producers and investors. Facing the economic downturn, Chinese market is getting more attempting to investors both at home and abroad. What can we expect from co-production business after successive market growth over the past years? Are there different approaches applicable to Chinese-foreign co-productions with different sizes of budget? What co-productions have been well received by different marketplaces across the world? This seminar will look at the opportunities and strategies of Chinese-foreign co-production over the financial recession.

Asian Producers\' Network aims to strengthen collaboration among Asian film producers. Thanks to identical cultural backgrounds, such collaboration, particularly among Chinese, Japanese and South Korean counterparts, enjoys great advantages, linking marketplaces and common creative resources of the three territories. This may lower investment risk by big margin. Nevertheless, there are different rules and applications prevailing in different countries. The APN session will not only present the resourceful Asian production houses experienced in regional co-production and Chinese film companies/studios who are able to get involved in co-production or service-based assistance, but also share with industry people the experiences of Chinese-foreign co-production.

Film Roundtable II. Fifty Years on New Wave: Heritage or Revolution?

The French New Wave has influenced generations by revolutionizing Hollywood film industry and aesthetics, focusing on innermost feelings of filmmakers, and emphasizing the camera as director\'s pen in hand. In this campaign, numerous talented French directors, such as Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Alain Renais, are well remembered in the history of world cinema. The New Wave campaign has also influenced Chinese cinema significantly. The film language of 4th and 5th generation in
China echoed that of the New Wave. Young film directors like Wang Xiaoshuai, Jia Zhangke grew up watching New Wave films. How things have changed. Fifty years on, is the New Wave concept still applicable? Or has it prevented French and Chinese cinemas from going further? Do we still need the New Wave concept in creation? If yes, what are we going to accept or reject? This session will certainly serve as a constructive push to world cinema as well as Chinese film creation.

Film Roundtable III. Female Filmmakers\' Roundtable: Another Perspective

Since the 1990s, a new generation of Chinese woman directors has been emerging, presenting different film styles, and established themselves both in commercial and independent film making. Being female, at the background of
China\'s transition period, they made a unique cinematic phenomenon and received wide attention from both at home and abroad. This session will discuss their achievements, experiences, as well as puzzlement.
At the session, Jia Zhangke, one of the two moderators, will converse with the woman directors as the opposite gender to present man\'s perspective of his counterparts. The other moderator Zhao Jing, author of Interviews with Chinese Woman Directors which took her two years to finish, will share with the panelists about her thought as film critic.

How to get prepared? What can they get from film festivals? Is there any midway for them to keep their characters while going commercial? The four Chinese winners of Asian New Talent Award will get together to share with the audience about their failures and successes to mark the 5th anniversary of the Award.

Master Class I. Fable of an Era: Xie Jin in the View of His Friends

Film director Xie Jin was a master who exerted great impact on Chinese people for decades with his films. He is regarded as industry icon in the emancipation campaign starting from the 1980s, which is the second of its kind since the May Fourth Movement in 1919. His films which featured time mission with "local" cinematic language have enjoyed the largest audience in the country\'s history. At the same time, he combined the elements of socialist realism and
Hollywood melodrama to create a mixed genre of "political melodrama", which enables him to keep in balance in terms of politics and the public, history and family, ethics and humanity. This has brought him great honor from the world industry. To commemorate the master who passed away last year, the film masters and pros from different parts of the world who were his collaborators and close friends will gather to memorize him.
