The 17th SIFF in 2014 brought the congregating philosophy of the film festival into full play. It focused on the concepts of Asia, China and New Talents with an aim to build an international platform for film cooperation and communication, to nurture new film talents and to promote the diversified development of the Chinese film industry. It achieved this with a professional and authoritative approach to awarding films, facilitating dialogue between Chinese and foreign film elites, supporting film market negotiation, attracting an unparalleled lineup of superstars and international judges, programming a fantastic international film panorama and involving fans in film discussions. By creating a high-quality, professional and pragmatic platform for filmmakers interested in different areas and audiences, it sustained and grew its status as the largest film pageant in the Asian-Pacific region in terms of scale and influence.
The competition events of SIFF, the Golden Goblet Award and Asian New Talent Award, have won high praise for their professionalism, artistry and authority. The 17th SIFF in 2014 attracted 1,643 films for competition, and 1,808 for exhibition, including the works of Volker Schlondorff and Masayuki Suo on the shortlist. The premiere of international films like \'Begin Again\' and \'Eliza Graves\' demonstrate the core influence of SIFF. Of all the productions by film masters and new film talents, the Greek entry \'Little England\' won the Golden Goblet Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress Awards. It will be a contender for the 2015 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards on behalf of Greece. The Asian New Talent Best Film and Best Director Award went to \'I\'m Not Angry!\' which also won the Vincent Ward Scholarship from University of Canterbury.
Since its establishment seven years ago, SIFF\'s Film Project Market has successfully promoted over 10 projects and connected promising film talents with world film industry finance sources. This support has resulted in outstanding productions like \'Black Coal, Thin Ice\', \'Scrape My Bone\', \'The Piano in a Factory\' ,\'Mr. Tree\' And \'The Uncle Victory.\' These films have won high praise and important prizes in the industry, including the Berlin Film Festival\'s Golden Bear Award. The newly-upgraded 2014 New Talent Project went beyond its routine scope and directly supported eight young Chinese creative forces, trying to bring new blood into the film industry with a more comprehensive approach. The 2015 SIFF Project will be open for applications on November 30,2014. Enrollments for the International Film Market sector will start to be taken on January 1, 2015.
