On April 16, Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) officially announced the list of 15 organizations and 15 individuals who have been invited to nominate filmmakers for the first session of “SIFF YOUNG X Shanghai Young Filmmaker Support Program” (“SIFF YOUNG” for short).
SIFF YOUNG is guided by Shanghai Film Bureau and jointly initiated by SIFF and the Marché du Film. It aims to bring China’s young filmmakers in contact with the overseas film industry by making use of SIFF as an international platform and help Shanghai further improve its film talent development system and promote the development of a global film and television production center during the 14th Five Year Plan period with a series of Shanghai’s key talent support policies.
SIFF YOUNG was launched this March, and has been actively responded and participated in by many domestic film and television companies, professional organizations and famous directors and producers. 15 organizations and 15 individuals keeping a close eye on the growth of emerging filmmakers recommended in three weeks young filmmakers for the final list. These nominators include top domestic film and television companies, famous directors, producers, international distributors, etc.
The nominating organizations and individuals recommended young Chinese filmmakers who are under the age of 45 and with no more than 3 works under their name. Later this month, the SIFF Organizing Committee will announce the shortlist of young filmmakers for SIFF YOUNG, and the winners will be announced at the end of May. The young filmmakers selected for the program will not only take part in related events at the 24th SIFF this June, but also be given the opportunity, if it is suitable when this year’s Cannes Film Festival is held, of official promotion and exhibition to international industry professionals and media at the world’s largest film market.
SIFF has also released the SIFF YOUNG LOGO which is made up of two parts that form the letter Y. Shaped like two hands holding up something, it signifies the support that SIFF and Cannes Film Festival give to China’s young filmmakers and the endless possibilities of the film industry and its bright orange color symbolizes young filmmakers’ vitality and hope.
Oriented to serving “Asian, Chinese and young filmmakers”, SIFF has long been interested in the growth and development of China’s young filmmakers and looking for a long-term support mechanism. The SIFF YOUNG program launched under the guidance of Shanghai Film Bureau aims not only to showcase the new landscape of China’s film production to the international market through the two international A-list film festivals (SIFF and Cannes), but also to collaborate with the Shanghai government in developing policies supporting the film and television industry to establish a development system, specialized fund, and policy support for outstanding young filmmakers and promote the implementation of policies.
