SCI-FILM WEEK | Preview of Thematic Forums

The 25th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has, this year, introduced the SCI-FILM WEEK to spotlight the genre of sci-fi films. Echoing the Ten Policies for Sci-fi films, a series of events in this section will bring together the backbones of Chinese sci-fi film industry and filmmakers in this sector from home and abroad to clear the path for Chinese sci-fi films in development with an international mindset.

The SCI-FILM WEEK comes with a variety of activities including thematic forums, thematic screenings and open screenings. Among them, at the SCI-FI FILM WEEK Keynote Forum, the Science and Film Fusion Forum and the Film Technology Forum, renowned creators of Chinese sci-fi films such as Guo Fan, Wang Hongwei, Lu Chuan, Dong Runnian and Zhang Chiyu, internationally famous visual effects artist Pete Bebb, as well as concept developers of a wide range of well-made sci-fi films among other behind-the-scenes creators and scientific advisors will join each other to touch upon topics such as “International Vision and Times Context of Sci-fi Films”, “Sci-fi Films: Imagination and Scientific Spirit” and “Sci-fi Films - Engine for the Upgrading of the Film Industry”.

(2) Roundtable Forum: Sci-fi Films - Engine for the Upgrading of the Film Industry

Curated around major sci-fi films and the development and application cases of film and TV technologies at home and abroad, it will invite the heads of major film and television projects and visual effects to spotlight the current hot core technologies, discuss the role of science fiction films in boosting the film industry, and offer ideas for the high-quality development of sci-fi films.

This forum will mainly serve to interpret the background and context of sci-fi films in development, discuss the Chinese sci-fi film industry and its cultural value from an international perspective, explore the direction and path for telling Chinese stories to the world through sci-fi films, and promote the high-quality development and flourishing of Chinese sci-fi films.

(1) Roundtable Forum – Sci-Films: Imagination and Scientific Spirit

The creative process of sci-films requires a serious approach to the scientific basis and scientific logic, which often determines whether or not a science fiction film is well-grounded. From the THE WANDERING EARTH series to MOON MAN, the scientific basis of the science fiction setting and the scientific advisors in the production process are extremely important behind every sci-fi film. And this forum is dedicated to the collision and fusion of film and science in the production process of science fiction films.

(2) Future Engine - Annual Outlook of Sci-fi Films

This forum will gather the creators of high-profile film projects to envision the future and announce the upcoming outstanding domestic science fiction film projects. Showcasing the diversity of China’s sci-fi films in creation, it will allow audiences to follow the development of Chinese sci-fi films, boost industry confidence for local sci-fi films, and pool forces to start a new journey for the future of Chinese sci-fi films.
