REGULATIONS FOR SIFF EXPLORE 2023
Article 1
These regulations apply to works and persons registered for SIFF EXPLORE of the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival (hereinafter referred to as the “festival”).
Article 2
SIFF EXPLORE is an important initiative for the improvement of the new talent cultivation system. It aims to scout new talents and help them grow through short video works, explore new works and expressions, take advantage of and give full play to the platform, integrate social resources and expand the talent pool.
Article 3
The 25th SIFF will hold its SIFF EXPLORE unit in June 2023.
As the 25th SIFF originally scheduled for 2022 has been postponed to take place in 2023, works and persons already registered for SIFF EXPLORE during the original registration period need not get registered again.
Article 4
Participants of SIFF EXPLORE shall be the main creators of the short video works registered who own the copyrights or their authorized representatives. Only one main creator, regardless of nationality, can be submitted for each short video works when getting registered.
Article 5
Short video works meeting the following criteria are eligible for registration:
Filming time: April 1, 2022-March 31, 2023;
Running time: 5 minutes or less, including opening and closing credits;
Genre: Feature, documentary, animation, experimental film, etc.
Subtitles: There must be Chinese and English subtitles for dialogues, narration and voiceover;
Quality requirements: Only in MOV or MP4 high-definition format, 1080p HD (codec H.264), in line with the playing standard for 2K;
Orientation: Both landscape and portrait orientations are okay.
Article 6
Log in to our website www.siff.com, register an account in the "EXPLORE submission" module and register online by filling in the required information of the registered work one by one. If the short video work submitted for registration has won or been shortlisted for any awards on other platforms or events, please list in the column "Awards received or nominated". Applicants should ensure that the information filled in is true and valid.
The registration period is from the date of issuance of these regulations to March 31, 2023.
Article 7
The festival will hire professionals to review the submitted works, and select the creators of 50 short video works for the shortlist. Finally, 20 outstanding creators will be selected as candidates, and they will be recommended during the festival.
The shortlist will be announced in May 2023 on our website www.siff.com and other official channels. The festival will notify the candidates by phone or email. So applicants should make sure they can be reached through their contact information. Applicants must inform the festival in advance should they decide to cancel their registration.
Once their work is selected, the candidates must actively cooperate with the relevant arrangements of the organizing committee, and shall not withdraw the selected work for any reason, and promise to attend all the activities of the SIFF EXPLORE unit.

Article 8
After the festival organizing committee’s evaluation of the conditions for SIFF 2023 (including but not limited to the impact of the epidemic and other factors), 20 selected candidates will be invited to attend the relevant activities of the SIFF EXPLORE unit, and the following privileges will be provided. These are only valid for the applicants invited, namely the main creators or their authorized representatives:
Participation in a series of activities in the SIFF EXPLORE unit held in June 2023, including official activities such as on-site promotion, exploration class, red carpet of the closing ceremony, and subsequent film training courses undertaken by Shanghai Vancouver Film School;
Selected candidates can enjoy stay for 3 nights at a designated hotel during the festival at the expense of the festival;
The festival will use its website, official WeChat and Weibo accounts, official cooperative media and other channels to promote the selected candidates and their works.
Article 9
The festival has the right to use the selected short video works for online and offline screening and publicity, including but not limited to: multi-platform screenings, official brochures, official posters, leaflets, cooperative media and other promotional channels.
The festival has the right to archive the selected short video works, which are only used for data retention and not for any commercial use.
Article 10
Anyone who signs up for the SIFF EXPLORE unit is deemed to have acknowledged and accepted these regulations. Applicants are obliged to ensure that the registered short video works comply with laws and regulations, and shall not infringe the rights of third parties.
Article 11
The festival will keep an eye on the development of the COVID situation and follow the national COVID prevention and control policy. If the epidemic affects the normal holding of the festival, it may take corresponding flexible measures. In case of any progress and changes, the festival will provide the latest information in time.
Article 12
Matters not covered are subject to the official interpretation and notice of the festival, which reserves the right of final interpretation of the terms of these regulations.
