Weinstein Co buys Reign of Assassins
The Weinstein Co has acquired North American and South African rights to The Reign of Jianyu. Harvey Weinstein is in shanghai today to attend the festival premiere of Shanghai starring John Cusack and Gong Li.
Assassins is a 12 million dollars period action film that tells the story of a female assassin who falls in love with a man whose family member was killed by her gang. Unaware that he is also a trained martial artist, tensions begin to creep in to their relationship.
The cast is headed by Michelle Yeoh and South Korea\'s Jung Woo-sung.The picture boasts John Woo as producer and supervising director working with Su Chao-pin as director.
Production is by Woo and Terence Chang\'s Lion Rock Productions with production and finance coming from China\'s Galloping Horse, Hong Kong\'s Media Asia and Taiwan-based companies Gamania and Lumiere.
International sales are handled by Fortissimo Films and in certain Asian territories by Media Asia. Fortissimo handled the deal with TWC.
The film is a hot tip to appear at the Venice festival in September, where Woo will receive a lifetime achievement award.
Principal photography was completed in China mainland on Friday 27 Feb, with a few outstanding scenes filmed in Taiwan in March.
The supporting cast is a starry group including: Barbie Hsu , Wang Xueqi , Shawn Yue , Kelly Lin, Guo Xiaodong , Jiang Yiyan , Pau Hei-ching , Leon Dai and John Woo\'s daughter Angeles Woo.
Technical credits include Horace Wong as cinematographer, Japanese Oscar-winner Wada Emi as costume designer, Stephen Tung as action choreographer, Cheung Ka-fai as editor and Peter Kam as music composer.
