In order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of PRC, a special section known as “Chinese Classics” is specially set up at the12th SIFF. This section will aim to show a batch of Chinese classic movies representative of different stages of new China.
It is said that the classics to be screened are representative works of various phases in Chinese film history, from the exploring period to the climax capped by the fifth generation of Chinese directors after the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy, and to the diverse development period in the new century. Some of the movies are so classic that they have exerted their influence on several generations, such as Crows and Sparrows directed by Zhao Dan, a movie about the life of Shanghainese; February and Reconnaissance Across The Yangtze, both played by a prestigious artist Sun Daolin; Yellow Earth, co-directed by famous directors ChenKaige and Zhang Yimou , known as the first Chinese movie that has ever won an international award. In addition, some excellent movies that have been popular with Chinese audience for the past few years will also be on the list for show, like The Assembly, The Go Master, Forever Enthralled and Mountain Patrol.
This time “Chinese Classics” is supposed to present a visual feast to international filmmakers with the most representative films in 60-year Chinese film history. Relevant sources from SIFF said in an interview: “A combination of classic movies and new ones will be screened this time. So this will be a golden time for everybody to grasp a thorough knowledge of Chinese films. This is the exact thing SIFF designs to bring to all.
Some experts maintain that this film panaroma “Chinese Classics” made up of classic films for the past 60 years will not only demonstrate the evolutional aesthetics of Chinese films, but it will also provide a panoramic view of Chinese social change. It is believed that the 12th SIFF is bound to present a ever grand spiritual banquet as a special gift to the 60th birth anniversary of our motherland.
