SIFF PROJECT | 15th SIFF PROJECT of 24th Shanghai International Film Festival calls for 2021 submiss

The 15th SIFF PROJECT of the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 12th to June 15th, 2021. From January 1, 2021, SIFF PROJECT starts calling for entries by global filmmakers. The finalists will be invited to participate in relevant events at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival. 


 
Born in 2007, SIFF PROJECT, as an influential film project financing event in Asia, has been successfully held for 14 sessions so far. Witnessing 76 projects being made to movies, including some award-winning films in major film festivals, SIFF PROJECT has received extensive attention and recognition in both home and abroad.

In 2020, among the films from SIFF PROJECT, The Calming was awarded the Art Cinema Award at the Forum of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival by the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas; Hot Soup was shortlisted in the main competition of the Warsaw International Film Festival 2020, and Mordaga entered the main competition of the 42th Cairo International Film Festival. In addition, SIFF PROJECT has provided 5 official selections to the Asian New Talents Awards of the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival.

As both an incubator of excellent works and an important platform for the industry to discover Chinese new talents, SIFF PROJECT is committed to gathering industry resources, supporting rising Chinese filmmakers, and promoting Sino-foreign cooperation. After years of development, it has now gradually established four sub-units – New Talent Project, Co-production Project, Pre-production Project and Work in Progress Project, offering incubation, financing, and promotion services tailored to 30-40 projects every year at different stages.

New Talent Project Negotiation Meeting of 2020 SIFF PROJECT

In 2020, SIFF PROJECT received a total of 450 submissions from 9 countries and regions, of which 39 were eventually shortlisted: 10 fell into New Talent Project, 3 into Co-production Project, 16 into Pre-production Project, and 10 into Work in Progress Project. The shortlisted projects vary in genres and themes, gathering industry veterans and new talents together. The event has organized 509 negotiation meetings, 3 rounds of “Work in Progress Project” test screenings, and 20 open presentations, which has received warm response and extensive attention in both home and abroad.

 
To facilitate Shanghai International Film Festival’s support for emerging Chinese filmmakers, among the shortlisted projects, 10 will be selected into the New Talent Project sub-unit to participate in the Golden Goblet Award ceremony and red carpet event at the opening ceremony of SIFF, as well as presentations open to the entire industry and the media.

To substantially promote the co-production and collaboration of Chinese and foreign films and recommend projects with potentials for international cooperation, 3-5 projects will be shortlisted in the Co-Production Project sub-unit.

The Pre-production Project sub-unit will select more skilled directors or develop more complete projects. 15 projects are shortlisted in the Project every year.

The Work in Progress Project sub-unit provides the projects under filming and post-production with corresponding assistance in production, domestic and international distribution and promotion at film festivals. The directors of finalist projects are entitled to public presentations, negotiations and other project activities.

Inclusion Criteria

I. Co-Production Project, Pre-production Project and Work in Progress Project
1. Feature films that have the potential to be screened in cinemas (animation films excluded);
2. Chinese films or films co-produced by China and foreign countries;
3. Before June, 2021, projects under production, financing, shooting and post-production can be submitted;
4. The script has been finished;
5. The project budget has been determined (projects with over 20% of funds in place will be given priority to);
6. The director and producer has been determined;
7. The projects that have not participated in other platform of this kind in the Chinese-speaking regions will be given priority to.

II. New Talent Project
1. Meet the inclusion criteria of “I. Co-Production Project, Pre-production Project and Work in Progress Project”;
2. Chinese films;
3. The film is the first or the second feature film of the director.
