A New Dream Journey: SIFF Explore Training Camp – Short Video Unit Kicks off

On November 30, the SIFF Explore Training Camp – Short Video Unit jointly organized by the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) and Shanghai Vancouver Film School kicked off in Shanghai. 29 students who signed up for the camp are now embarking on a week-long journey to fulfill their film dreams.

The Short Video unit was founded in 2019. Through collection, promotion, training and tracking, it aims to discover excellent short videos with a running time of no more than 4 minutes and their creators. Today the Short Video unit has become an integral part of the SIFF step-structured new talents incubation system, together with the Golden Goblet Awards – Short Film, SIFF Project, Asian New Talent Awards, and Golden Goblet Awards.

The Short Video unit in 2020 is divided into two stages. The first stage includes major activities including the recommendation of new creators and new works, roundtable forum, and SIFF Explore course, which were successfully organized during this year\'s SIFF. Then the creators of 20 selected works were invited to Shanghai for a special recommendation session at the featured Short Video event on July 28.

The SIFF Explore training camp that kicked off today is the second stage of the Short Video unit. It focuses more on the follow-up training of the selected students. Through lectures, SIFF Explore workshops, presentations, and in-person instruction by industry experts, the students are allowed to study and practice at the same time. In this way, the younger generation with film dreams are given an opportunity to step further towards their filmmaking career.

This one-week training camp offers courses carefully set up around "the whole process of film and television production and how to present projects." Noted teachers at home and abroad are invited to the scene to answer questions from the students and share experience, including the young director LI Ruijun, the famous script doctor from North America Dean BURNS, WANG Jiaren, who has participated in the production of commercial blockbusters DETECTIVE CHINATOWN VOL 2 and THE WANDERING EARTH, YUAN Yuan, executive producer of animation blockbusters NE ZHA and LEGEND OF DEIFICATION, YAN Daiyao, cinematographer of THE GREAT WALL, and Ray ZHAO, senior film and television recording mixer and CAS senior member.

TONG Ying, Deputy Director of Shanghai International Film & TV Festival Center, JIANG Weimin, Executive President of Shanghai Vancouver Film School, and LIU Qian, Editor-in-Chief of Migu Video, attended the opening ceremony. On the occasion, they encouraged students to learn and put what they’ve learnt into practice and create more good works, and wished they fulfill their film dreams soon. On the same day, YUAN Yuan, General Manager of Hongli Animation Studios, delivered an insightful first class to the students with best animation practices such as NE ZHA and LEGEND OF DEIFICATION. He explained roles, environment, visual development, animation performance, lighting, special effects, etc. in simple language, and shared his valuable experience in film and television animation and special effects production, which benefited the students a lot.

The following courses are equally intriguing and inspiring. On December 5, a project presentation meeting will also be held. A review panel composed of training camp instructors, industry experts, and business representatives will comment on the project submitted by each student and help improve their presentation ability, apart from a thorough understanding of the entire operation process of film and television projects.
