Lineup of mentors and judges in the short film section announced
“Four minutes to pursue the dream of cinema!” The short film section of the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from July 28 to 29. Director Zhou Ziyi and Liu Kuo, screenwriter Yuan Yuan, actress Li Meng and Migu Video CEO Wang Bin will serve as the mentors and judges of the short film section to select outstanding works and explore the potential of new talents.
As a measure to support new talent created by the Shanghai International Film Festival last year, the short film section will continue to use short films as the carrier to discover and cultivate young talents of visual creation through means of solicitation, promotion, training, tracking etc. to enrich the reserve of film talents. At the event, the mentors and judges will communicate with excellent short filmmakers and open master classes to guide the future development of young talents.
Zhou Ziyang, Director, Screenwriter
His debut film Old Beast won the 54th Golden Horse Awards for Best Original Screenplay and FIPRESCI Prizes, the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival Asian Unit Special Award and the 9th China Film Directors Guild for Young Director of the Year. His second film, Wuhai, starring Huang Xuan and Yang Zishan, has finished filming and has been recommended by Screen Daily as one of the most attractive films for film festivals in 2020.
Liu Kuo, Animation director, Screenwriter, Expert of animation technology
One of the representative figures of Chinese animation, graduated from Beijing Film Academy and now teaches at Beijing Film Academy. Liu Kuo has written many monographs on 3D animation technology, presided over national scientific research projects, and directed many feature animations, such as Century Sonny, Shalen, Hua Jiang Hu Zhi Bu Liang Ren, etc. In 2018, Liu Kuo directed the first Hua Jiang Hu animation, which won the 32nd Golden Rooster Awards for Best Art Film.
Yuan Yuan, Screenwriter
Master of Cinematography, School of Theater, Film and Television, Communication University of China. After graduation, Yuan Yuan has been engaging in full-time film and television drama making. Go Away Mr. Tumor represented mainland China in the 88th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2019, Yuan Yuan’s screenplay Us And Them was nominated for the 32nd Golden Rooster Awards and the 55th Golden Horse Awards for Best Screenplay.
Li Meng, Actress
Graduated from Beijing Film Academy, Li Meng’s representative works include Young Love Lost, Dead Pigs, Ever Since We Love, etc. In 2016, the role of Bai Lan in factory youth film Young Love Lost, which was adapted from the novel of the same name by Lu Nei, was nominated for Best Actress at the 23rd Beijing College Student Film Festival. In 2018, Li Meng won the 34th Sundance Film Festival for Best Group Performance for Dead Pigs, becoming the first Chinese actress born in 1990s to win at the Sundance Film Festival, and the only Chinese film to be nominated and awarded. She played the role of Wang Yao in the online drama The Bad Kids in 2020, and her performance was well received.
Wang Bin, Migu Video CEO
Master of Computer Science, Xi\'an Jiaotong University. He has been the president of Shanghai Network Audio-visual Industry Association since 2015. In 2019, he was selected into the expert database of the network audio-visual program content support project of the National Radio and Television Administration. Since 2018, he has been the head of the content supply group of China Ultra High Definition Video Industry Alliance. He has been awarded Leader of Shanghai Smart City 2018, 30 Brand Innovation Leaders of China New Growth 2018, Innovation Leader of Network Audio-visual Content Innovation person of 2017 and National May Day Labor Medal.
