SIFF WORLD EXPRESS | Two Chinese Films Awarded at Dublin International Film Festival

On March 8, the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF) 2020 concluded in Dublin, Ireland. Recommended by the SIFF WORLD EXPRESS of the Shanghai International Film Festival, several Chinese films were screened at DIFF, among which SEND ME TO THE CLOUDS garnered Best Screenplay of the Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards and IF YOU ARE HAPPY won a Jury Prize.

The SIFF WORLD EXPRESS program recommended five films to this year’s DIFF. They are SEND ME TO THE CLOUDS, IF YOU ARE HAPPY, SPRING TIDE, THE SOUND OF DALI, and the 4K restoration of FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI, which were so popular with the audience that tickets to their premiere at the 22nd SIFF 2019 were hard to come by.

During the DIFF, the screenings of the five Chinese films attracted a large number of local audience and filmmakers. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the crew and cast could not make it to Dublin for the screenings, but some directors and actors of the films recorded videos to greet the audience and share their stories in making the films.

SIFF World Express was a “Going Global” project started by SIFF in 2015. Utilizing the platform advantages as one of the 15 non-specialized competitive international film festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, the SIFF carefully selects Chinese-language films from the competition and film panorama each year to more international film festivals and regions and promotes their overseas distribution. Meanwhile, it strongly supports the shortlisted “SIFF projects” to enter the international film market, and facilitates their co-production negotiation and overseas pre-sale.

For more than four years since its launch, the SIFF WORLD EXPRESS has delivered over 50 outstanding Chinese films and projects to countries including Japan, Italy, Indonesia, and the UK; meanwhile, film festival organizers of other countries have also delivered through it their outstanding new films to Chinese audiences.
