Nuri Bilge Ceylan Takes up the Position of the Golden Goblet Awards Jury President

The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) Organizing Committee announces today that the famous Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be the President of the Jury for the 22nd SIFF Golden Goblet Awards Competition.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is known in Turkey as a “national-treasure director” and is one of the outstanding directors who oft-repeatedly wins honors at Cannes International Film Festival. Since the start of his career, he has a total of six feature films selected for the main competition units of Cannes International Film Festival, and has won many awards such as the best film, best director and jury prize at this festival.

Ceylan was born in Istanbul on January 26, 1959, and grew up in Yenice, Canakkale, Turkey. After graduating from the electrical engineering major at Bosphorus University, he spent two years studying films at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

In 1995, Ceylon began to show his talents with the short film KOZA, and his next two feature films KASABA and CLOUDS OF MAY were shortlisted at the Berlin International Film Festival. The following works, UZAK, IKLIMLER, THREE MONKEYS and ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA, won him two jury awards, one best director award, one best actor award and one FIPRESCI Prizes at Cannes International Film Festival. In 2014, Ceylon won the Golden Palm, the top honor of Cannes International Film Festival, with WINTER SLEEP. And his new work, THE WILD PEAR TREE, was shortlisted for the main competition at the 71st Cannes International Film Festival.

As a director, Ceylan has a unique film language. He depicts the journey of life with deep long lens and accurately expresses his philosophical thinking and reveal the truth of life to audiences silently in poetic words and literary narration.

Previously, Luc Besson, CHEN Kaige, Karwai Wong, Danny Boyle, John Woo, Jean Jacques Annaud, Tom Hooper, GONG Li, Andrei Zvyagintsev, Emir Kusturica, Cristian Mungiu, JIANG Wen and other film artists have been invited to be the Jury President for the Golden Jubilee Awards Competition.
