The story was set in Sacramento, California, in 2002, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine McPherson (Lady Bird) is a senior student at a Catholic high school in Sacramento. She longs to attend an Ivy League college in "a city with culture". Her family is struggling financially. Her mother is a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father loses his job. She fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom and her mother tells her that Lady Bird is ungrateful for what she has. In the end, Lady Bird learns she has been accepted by a college in New York, where she finds thoughtful letters written by her mother and salvaged by her father, and begins using her birth name again.

A man, in his middle age crisis, buys a restaurant. One day, his employee takes back a street dog. To pass the sanitary inspection, they hide it in the washroom, where a Syrian man also takes shelter in it. He was an engineer in his own country with a decent job, but when he became a refugee and fled to Finland, he is violently battered, and gets transferred from one asylum to another by the government. So the homeless man has to go back to his unsettled life with the dog and the wounds, knowing that there are things that he just can't deal with.

Less than 20 years after the Yugoslav war ended, a group of veterans gather at a remote mountain hotel. They have very different characters, which make it hard for them to live in harmony. The sorrow of losing comrade-in-arms, the sadness as time passes, and the horror experienced in the battlefield, all these negative feelings come quietly in the dead of night, tormenting their fragile and vulnerable hearts. Their emotions can't find a way out, thus they can only resort to violence. But at the same time, they have grown to understand each other more and are willing to give up what they have sticked to in order to take care of others' feelings. The emotional bond between them is becoming stronger and stronger, and their inner wounds are healing.

A lady-in-waiting is telling the prince in his palace a metaphysical fairy tale, set in the past and revolving around the mysterious murder of the Tsar’s son in the forest. The characters in the fable – witnesses to this violent crime – narrate different versions of the events, shedding light on what really happened.
