SIFF x MAMI signs a New cooperative agreement

On April 14, the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) and the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI, for Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) held a signing ceremony in Mumbai, confirming nine new cooperation items. YU Xiufen, Director of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV and ZHENG Xiyuan, Consul General of China in Mumbai, attended the signing ceremony. FU Wenxia, Managing Director of the Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center, and Anupama CHOPRA, Director of Mumbai Film Festival, signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of two sides.

The cooperation agreement signed between SIFF and MAMI is to, taking cinema as a medium, promote cultural communication and exchanges, enhance bilateral understanding of cultural customs and traditions, encourage filmmakers of the two countries to learn from each other, and drive relevant institutions to organize film exhibitions; strengthen partnership in the areas of film production, distribution and screening, and boost film education, film critic and other transnational exchanges, and further deepen the cooperation. The two festivals have also agreed to cooperate on arranging special screening programs, helping select local films and sharing experience in organization affairs concerning competition, panorama, reception and publicity.

More guests were present at the signing ceremony: LI Fanghui, Cultural Consul of China in Mumbai; PENG Qizhi, Director of the Film Division, YOU Haiyang, Director of the Radio & TV Division, and WU Qiong, Director of the Industry Division, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV; Smriti KIRAN, Creative Director of Mumbai Film Festival.

Shanghai and Mumbai entered into the relation of “sister cities” in September 2014, thus starting their cooperation and exchanges in the fields of government, economy and trade, culture, education, and think tanks. Both as film festivals in Asia, Shanghai International Film Festival and Mumbai Film Festival have been maintaining friendly exchanges. Last June, Smriti KIRAN, on behalf of Mumbai Film Festival, signed the Memorandum on Belt and Road Film Culture Cooperation in Shanghai with 15 film institutions from 14 countries including the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and the Cairo International Film Festival. In recent years, at the SIFF Belt and Road roundtable forum, MAMI representatives have also shared their ideas with their counterparts in various countries.

Organized by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), the Mumbai Film Festival is one of the largest international film festivals in India. The festival was founded in 1997 and is held every year in Mumbai. Shanghai is the birthplace of Chinese cinema; it is the same case for Mumbai to Indian cinema. Shanghai is building a global film and TV creation center, while Mumbai is the base camp of Bollywood. The deep cooperation between the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Mumbai Film Festival will build up a new platform for international cooperation, promote the emotional connection between the citizens living along the Belt and Road, and add new impetus to common development.
