SIFF PROJECT | 21st Shanghai International Film Festival •SIFF PROJECT Calls for Submission!

The 21st Shanghai International Film Festival •SIFF PROJECT is to take place during 17-19 June, 2018 in Shanghai. From January 1, 2018, SIFF PROJECT starts to seek superior film projects from filmmakers across the world. 30 projects will be selected among all the submissions to participate in the relevant programs at the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival.

Born in 2007, SIFF PROJECT, now as the most influential film project financing platform in Asia, bears the mission of connecting the film industry, supporting emerging Chinese filmmakers and facilitating Sino-foreign co-production. During the boom of China’s movie industry, not only has it become the incubator for good films, but also the very place to discover new Chinese talents.

Each year, 30 film projects are selected and presented by SIFF PROJECT, which include both the latest projects of established directors and the original ideas from fresh faces. They are offered the opportunities to meet directly with film financers, producers, distributors, and to be introduced to the media for the making of excellent films. In 2014, to better demonstrate the festival’s support for the upcoming generation of the Chinese film industry, it specially set a sub section called “New Talent Project”, where 10 projects will be included to receive more support and attention.

For eleven years, SIFF PROJECT has dedicated itself to discovering, presenting and supporting good stories and creative teams. Having facilitated the filming and production of 52 projects, including some award-winning films at major film festivals, SIFF PROJECT has gradually earned its reputation and recognition both at home and abroad.

In 2017 when it came to its11th year, SIFF PROJECT has received 380 applications from 21 countries and regions, and organized 690 meetings. Eventually, 36 projects were shortlisted, among which 10 entered New Talent Project and 6 came to SIFF PROJECT Lab.

By the end of 2017, 9 of the shortlisted projects had successfully finished shooting and started production; another five had been nominated at international film festivals and shown in theaters in China. The completion and release of these shortlisted projects underline the fact that SIFF PROJECT has already grown into a mature and effective incubator of quality Chinese film and stories.

Work progress of previous shortlisted projects

In 2018, SIFF PROJECT will make connections with China’s film industry resources in a more refined way, increasing support for projects under production by providing them with back-end resources such as domestic and international distribution, film festivals and exhibitions. This means the 2018 SIFF PROJECT not only accepts projects that are at financing stage to start filming, but also welcomes works that have started shooting or post-production.
