Absurd Accident – Nominee for Last Year’s Asian New Talent Award – Screens Today

Absurd Accident opens nationwide today. The black comedy is directed by Mr. Li Yuhe and stars Chen Xixu, Gao Ye, Ren Suxi, Dong Bo, Lou Yunfei, Geng Yizheng, Cao Rui and Chen Chunsheng. Following a nonlinear timeline, the movie is about a few nobodies who got themselves involved in a robbery and murder case in Northeast China. The interlocking story is presented in an unusual way, which may remind you of the classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels by Guy Ritchie. 

As Director Li Yuhe’s first full-length movie, Absurd Accident started script writing in 2013. After two years’ preparation, the shooting started at the end of 2015 and finished in only 24 days with a single camera, which was almost a miracle. What’s more, such a short period did not diminish at all the brilliance of the movie, which was nominated for Best Script Writer of the Asian New Talent Award at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival in 2016. Derek Tung-Shing Yee, the Jury President of the 19th SIFF paid particular attention to the movie as well.

Derek Tung-Shing Yee communicated intensively with the production team and provided a lot of support in the postproduction, in addition to becoming the producer of this new director’s movie. Together with the cast and crew who still could be deemed as new comers, Derek Tung-Shing Yee was present in many road shows to promote the work, which reflected his preference and appreciation for it.

Shanghai International Film Festival began to offer the Asian New Talent Award in 2004, which is committed to discover and nurture excellent new comers in Asian movie industry. Since then, many young talents in Asian have become known to a wider public and acknowledged by professionals by way of this award. Thus, they are on their way to bigger successes.

Director Wang Xiaoshuai is invited as the Jury President for the Asian New Talent Award of the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival this year. The director upon receiving the invitation expressed high expectations for the works of the new talents.
