New Movie Market Ecology Emerging in the Internet+ Era,Say Film Experts
"The internet has been an endless source of inspiration," said Stephen Hamel.
The power of Internet+ that is helping the speedy transformation and upgrade of the film industry was discussed at a SIFF Forum during the ongoing 2016 Shanghai International Film and TV Festival.
The forum, co-organized by Baidu Nuomi Pictures, was told the new media of interaction and communication have uncovered the hidden value of China\'s film industry in the fields of production and distribution.
Zeng Liang, vice president of Baidu and general manager of Baidu Nuomi, said, however, there are shadows looming behind the prosperity of China\'s booming box office.
These shadows are the two main topics of this year\'s film festival, the influence of capital on film production and the merging of film with the internet.
"Baidu respects the film industry and, although the internet\'s emphasis is on speed, we are willing, with patience and respect, to build a new ecology of co-existence, sharing and win-win with the film industry," Zeng said.
Stephen Hamel, the American producer of films including "Henry\'s Crime" and "Passengers," said there is always a case of cross-combination on all platforms.
"The internet has been an endless source of inspiration," he said.
"My experience in China in the last couple of years shows that the youth market here has the same information as everywhere else," Hamel said."They want good stories and they want good content."
Bennett Pozil of East West Bank said the internet is one more medium for filmmakers in both the United States and China with which to experiment.
“We are seeing a huge positive change between Hollywood and China,” he said.“The biggest change I see so far is that China has the biggest impact on studios.”
Like other consumer products, he said, the internet has changed the consumer’s way of spending.
"Right now we are watching movies being produced at a cost of between 20 to 50 million dollars. Wouldn\'t it be better to experiment on the internet and have a direct impact on consumers while you are making it," he said.
The internet has also changed the consumer\'s way of buying movie tickets and going to the cinema. The time of waiting in lines has been significantly decreased with the help of mobile apps.
"It’s the freedom we get, so we should be embracing the new changes," said Pozil.
