  All Masterpieces of the Poet in the Cinema to be Shown at the SIFF

  The 19th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) is to be held in Shanghai on June 11 to 19, 2016."Nostalgia of Films" series in the "Tribute to Masters" section is to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of famous Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. All the masterpieces made in his life time including Nostalghia, The Steamroller and the Violin, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Stalker, The Sacrifice, Mirror and Ivan’s Childhood are expected to showcase during SIFF.

  Andrei Tarkovsky was born in 1932 in the village of Zavrazhye by the Volga in Russia to a famous poet father Alexandrovich Tarkovsky. Andrei Tarkovsky had endeavored to blend his father\'s poems in his works. His works, carved as exquisite as poetry, rendered distinguished personal style with his surreal approach, which made him an irreplaceable coordinate in the art film of a generation. Ingmar Bergman said of him "... the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.”

  Andrei Tarkovsky\'s first feature film Ivan\'s Childhood, won Golden Lion in the 1962 Venice Film Festival. His last film --The Sacrifice won the Grand Prix, FIPRESCI Prize, Best Artistic Contribution and Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. In December of the same year, Andrei Tarkovsky died of lung cancer in Paris. In his 54 year\'s of life time, he only made 7 feature films and 3 short films, but these films made him a master of the generation, which also impacted greatly on numerous filmmakers. Oscar Best Director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu who directed Birdman, The Revenant, once said that the works of Andrei Tarkovsky and other film masters had planted a seed in his heart many years ago.

  The "Nostalgia of Films--Retrospective of the 30th Anniversary of the Death of Andrei Tarkovsky" at this SIFF covers all of the classic works of this great master, including his first diploma film The Steamroller and the Violin; Ivan’s Childhood, the Golden Lion winner at 1962 Venice Film Festival; the FIPRESCI Prize winning film Andrei Rublev at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival; Solaris, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury winner at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival; Mirror, the autobiographical work shown in 1975; Stalker, the universally recognized, most mysterious work of Tarkovsky style; the most prestigious film Nostalghia, which was shot in 1983 in Italy and won the Best Director Award and FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival ; his last film, The Sacrifice, which won several awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986.

  The universally praised semi-autobiographical book Voyage in Time written by Andrei Tarkovsky is a must read for almost every art lovers in China. And "Voyage in Time" has become an icon known in film art. Andrei Tarkovsky\'s works are infiltrated with his deep understanding of poetry, music, literature, painting and other arts. His extraordinary carving to time and space bestowed his work with strong spiritual charisma.

  Andrei Tarkovsky\'s works passed down to our generation with his film copies displaced several times just like the unimaginable difficulties he was faced during his creation. Ulrich Gregor, the former President of the Jury of Asia New Talent Award had preserved Andrei Tarkovsky\'s film copies in his travelling case in those chaotic times.

  "Nostalgia of Films--Retrospective of the 30th Anniversary of the Death of Andrei Tarkovsky" in the "Tribute to Masters" section of this SIFF is to make a systematic review of Andrei Tarkovsky\'s great works. The audience will also experience the unforgettable journey of time and memory in the film history.

  It is reported that the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival is to release the screening schedule and other screening films in the "Tribute to Masters" section successively in the coming days.
