Emir Kusturica Named Jury President for Golden Goblet Award of the SIFF 2016
BERLIN, Germany, February 13 - The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) Organizing Committee has announced that internationally recognized Serbian director Emir Kusturica will serve as Jury President for Golden Goblet Award main competition of the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival. Emir Kusturica was awarded several times at Cannes, Berlin and Venice Film Festival. This year’s SIFF will be held from 11 to 19 June 2016.
Born in Sarajevo, Emir Kusturica is considered as one of the most talented and creative directors. In 1981, he made his successful feature debut Do You Remember Dolly Bell?. With this film, he won the Best First Work Award at that year’s Venice Film Festival.
During the 80s and 90s, Kusturica continued to make highly regarded films. In 1985, his second feature film When Father Was Away on Business earned him his first Palme d’Or and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Frequently awarded at different international film festivals, he is also one of the few directors who has been favored and won major awards in Cannes, Berlin and Venice. In 1995, with three-hour epic Underground, he won the Palme d’Or for the second time.

As China’s only A-category international film festival, Shanghai International Film Festival attracts a number of internationally distinguished filmmakers to the festival. Previous jury presidents include Gong Li, Wong Kar-wai, Tom Hooper, Jean-Jacques Annaud, John Woo, Danny Boyle, Luc Besson, Andrey Zvyagintsev, etc.

He received a degree in film directing at FAMU in Prague. After his studies, he directed for TV and won several awards. His first feature, Do You Remember Dolly Bell? Time of the Gypsies (1988) brought Kusturica the award for Best Director at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, while Arizona Dream brought him the Special Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1993. Kusturica’s Underground (1995) won a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and he got a Silver Lion for his Black Cat, White Cat (1998) at the Venice Film Festival. His documentary Super 8 Stories (2000) won the Best Film award at the St. Petersburg Documentary Festival in 2001. He directed Life is a Miracle in 2004 and Promise Me This in 2007. After this movie, Kusturica directed Maradona by Kusturica.
Time of the Gypsies, his punk-opera that was based on the themes of the movie, was first staged in the Opera Bastille in Paris in 2007.
Kusturica was the recipient of the Philippe Rotthier Prize for European Architecture in 2005 for the architecture of his ethno village Drvengrad in Serbia. Since 2008, Drvengrad hosts the annual Küstendorf Film and Music Festival, which showcases films and music from all around the world as well as a competition programme for student short films.
On 28 June 2011, Kusturica started the construction project, Andric?grad(Stone Town), located in Višegrad, Republika Srpska, dedicated to Nobel Prize winner – Ivo Andric?.
He is also the founder and a member of the band, “Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra” which tours around the world.
His autobiographical book, Death is an Unverified Rumor, was published in 2010, and his second book, a fictional novel Sto jada (Hundred Pains), got released in 2013.
He is currently filming On the milky road with Monica Bellucci, in which he plays a principal role.
