Shanghai and Vancouver collaborate to establish leading-edge film school

Shanghai University is collaborating with Vancouver Film School to establish a film institute in what is expected to become the city\'s film post-production cluster district, officials said yesterday at the ongoing 17th Shanghai International Film Festival.

The Shanghai Vancouver Film School will start taking enrollments this fall. Around 100 students will be admitted to major in film production, sound design for visual media, 3D animation and visual effects.

The original one-year training programs of Vancouver Film School will be used to cultivate new Chinese film talents according to North American standards, said Luo Hongjie, president of Shanghai University. Students also will be offered the chance to work in the entire production chain of the movie industry.

"We also plan to establish Zhabei International Film and Television Park to build Shanghai Vancouver Film School into a base for global film post-production," Luo said. "The park will attract the set-up of global enterprises in filmmaking, animation, games and digital media." 

Also yesterday to the applause of eager fans, the curtains went up on major film exhibitions.

IMAX Corporation introduced the IMAX version of nine movies to the film festival, offering an immersive experience for audiences. Among them are Super 8 and Born to Be Wild.

Officials from the company revealed they will cooperate with Chinese director Jiang Wen to present an IMAX version of his new drama film Gone with the Bullets which is slated for release on December 18.

A highlight yesterday was a special screening of the 4K restored high-definition digital version of The Goddess," a 1930s\' film starring actress Ruan Lingyu. The screening at Shanghai Film Museum was accompanied by a live orchestra playing a newly-commissioned score.

The restoration took KT Wong Foundation and China Film Archive around two years to complete.

Another of Ruan\'s films, the newly re-mastered Love and Obligation, will also be shown during the film festival.
