Over 20 years of brand building, Shanghai International Film Festival has completed the organization structure of the Class A Film Festival with its own characteristics, and has become a grand film gathering with international influence and cultural radiation.
At present, Chinese film industry is faced with unprecedented opportunities and challenges. We should grasp the opportunities and make a difference, continually produce excellent works to make Chinese films an important spiritual food of the great mass, promote harmonious development of the society, further deepen reform of film industry, and enlarge industry scale.
At this critical period, the SIFF this year has a significant mission. This year SIFF will gather power of films, cultivate new talents and flourish film art by more authoritative international film selection, more diversified international film showing and richer new talent incubation platform so as to make contributions to the promotion of Chinese film prosperity and international communication and cooperation, and the improvement of Chinese international image.
I believe that with the common endeavor of us all, relying on the rich and diversified Chinese culture and vitality of Chinese film by drawing on others’ successful experience, and depending on the rich cultural resources and advantageous status of international communication, Shanghai International Film Festival is sure to win better international reputation and greater success! I hope that by holding the various activities in this year’s film festival, Chinese film workers could deepen cooperation with global peers, strengthen their communication and exchange what one has for what one has not to achieve win-win and create new brilliance during the increasing world cultural exchange.
I sincerely wish the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival a complete success!
Vice Mayor of Shanghai
Chairperson, SIFF Organizing Committee
As the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival is about to begin, on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, I would like to extend my greatest congratulations to this film festival and the warmest welcome and sincere greetings to all the honored guests and journalists from around the world, and wish it a complete success!
Over 20 years of foundation, SIFF, a cultural name card of Shanghai, has become the most important and fastest-growing film festival in Asia-Pacific region and is the most vital platform for international communication of the film industry.
As economy and society advance rapidly, China’s film industry grows even more mature than ever before and China’s film market welcomes great prosperity. At this juncture, Shanghai International Film Festival, relying on Shanghai that is the financial center of China and once was the No.1 Film City in China, stays open to diversity and strives for excellence in order to play a role in promoting culture, uniting industries and advancing economy through the four segments of awards appraisal, film exhibitions, forums and market. In addition, SIFF, encouraging cultural diversity and reaching out to more people, fully takes its advantage of foreign cooperation and exchange and plays its role in leading the culture, educating the mass, serving the society and promoting development to make more contributions to build a smart Shanghai, improve cultural service quality and propel film industry of Shanghai, and China.
I hope that Shanghai International Film Festival can further grasp the new opportunity to achieve a prosperous development for China’s film industry, uphold the “Asia, Chinese language and New Talents”, and hold the belief to create a top-notch film festival worldwide. Besides, SIFF should raise its value, promote industrial development, improve its public service, incubate and support new talents, display multi-culture, and continuously and actively push Chinese films to the world stage so as to spread Chinese culture and make it more influential, and enhance the soft power of our national culture. This is where the duty, value and meaning of SIFF lie.
