Born in South Korea in 1962, JEKYU KANG began his filmmaking career as an award-winning screenwriter. He made his sensational debut as a director with “The Gingko Bed” in 1996. His second film “Shiri (1999)” became the biggest success in Korean film history, captivating 6.5 million viewers nationwide. This made “Shiri” the most watched film, a title previously held by “Titanic” with 4.3 million in Korea, as well as it made “Shiri” lead the Korean film industry to its renaissance. In addition, “Shiri” made an exceptional box office success in Japan as the most watched Asian foreign film ever, followed by the success in other Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. This made “Shiri” the start of Korean Wave, pronounced “Hallyu” in Korean, which refers to the current surge of popularity of South Korean popular culture in its East and Southeast Asian neighbor countries.
Following the success of “Shiri,” Kang’s next film “Tae GukGi: The Brotherhood of War (2004)” smashed box office records with 12 million viewers in Korea.
