The first Chinese actress to be crowned the highest acting honor at the Venice International Film Festival, Gong Li is also the only leading Chinese actor whose films have won the highest honor at all three of the top European international film festivals. For the worldwide audience, Gong Li is an icon of the modern Chinese woman, a symbol of someone who tackles life with strength and determination, never submitting to the vicissitudes of fate. She was also the first Chinese woman to be featured on the cover of TIME magazine.

Gong Li was accepted into the Central Drama Academy in 1985. While still a student at the Academy, she landed the leading role in Zhang Yimou\'s directorial debut RED SORGHUM, which went on to win the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1988. Ever since, Gong Li\'s performances have been highly lauded across the world.

Collaborating with many outstanding Chinese and Hollywood directors, Gong Li has played a wide-ranging myriad of characters, in the process garnering countless international awards and earning great critical success. Her many acclaimed films include: the 1992 Venice International Film Festival Golden Lion winner THE STORY OF QIU JU (for which she also won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress), the 1993 Cannes Film Festival Palme d\'Or winner FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE, and the 1994 Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner TO LIVE.

In 2004, Gong Li began her foray into American cinema, first participating in Rob Marshall\'s MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, followed in 2005 by Michael Mann\'s MIAMI VICE, playing opposite Colin Farrell. In 2006, she participated in Peter Webber\'s HANNIBAL RISING, then co-starred with John Cusack in Mikael Håfström\'s 2008 drama-thriller SHANGHAI. In 2009, she reunited with Zhang Yimou for CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, and has just completed the newest addition to Zhang Yimou\'s oeuvre, 2014\'s COMING HOME, playing opposite Chen Daoming. COMING HOME is slated to be screened Out of Competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Owing to Gong Li\'s ubiquitous worldwide fame and influence in the film industry, she has had the honor of serving as:

She has also been named Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, a UNESCO Artist for Peace, and in 2010, a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest rank given by the French government in the Arts. Her record of honors and accolades remains unrivaled by any other Chinese actress.

Shunji IWAI, Japanese director

 


He started to set foot on the road of film director since he launched his directorial debut LOVE LETTER in 1995. Then, his following films include critical success titles such as SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY, APRIL STORY, ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU, HANA AND ALICE, THE KON ICHIKAWA STORY, etc. In recent years, he started shooting oversea. In the film NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU, which is set in the city of New York, he directed one episode. In 2012, his novel “Banken Wa Niwa Wo Mamoru” (Gentosha) was published, the theatrical version of FRIENDS AFTER 3.11 was released in Japan. In the same year, he wrote the lyrics of BLOOM, a relief song, for NHK’s “Heading For Tomorrow”. He also directed VAMPIRE and produced I HAVE TO BUY NEW SHOES. In June 2013, he worked as a musician in the Japanese movie TOKU DE ZUTTO SOBA NI IRU, which was the first time for him to get involved in a film not as a director. In 2014, Tokyo TV broadcasted a midnight TV show MYSTERY OF THE TRANSFER STUDENTS. It was the director’s first attempt to take the roles of TV screenwriter and producer.

 

LIU Jie, Chinese director

 


In 1991, He graduated from Photography Department of Beijing Film Academy. From 1992, as director of photography or producer, he worked together with director WANG Xiaoshuai in a number of acclaimed independent films like BEIJING BICYCLE, DONG CHUN DE RI ZI and so on. In 2006, he started his directing career. COURTHOUSE ON THE HORSEBACK is his first work which won the Director-Official Awards in Premier Horizon at 63rd Venice International Film Festival. In 2007,he was invited to take part in the jury of Future Golden Lion Selection at 64th International Venice Film Festival. In 2009, He wrote and directed his second feature film JUDGE which won the Best Original Screenplay Award at 47th Golden Horse Film Festival and was nominated for Best Original Music, Best Director and Best Actor Awards there. JUDGE was also in the Official Selection line-up in 66rd Venice International Film Festival’s Orizzonti. In 2010, he wrote and directed the film DEEP IN THE CLOUDS which won Jury Grand Prix, Golden Goblet Award for Best Director and Best Music at 13th Shanghai International Film Festival. DEEP IN THE CLOUDS was also nominated for Best Original Music, Best Adapted Screenplay at 47th Golden Horse Film Festival. In 2013, he wrote and directed the film YOUNG STYLE which was well acclaimed by the industry and the public as well. It won CCTV-6 Media Awards for Best Film and Best Actor at 16th Shanghai International Film Festival. Then in 50th Golden Horse Film Festival, it was nominated for Best New Actor and Actress Award.

 

Payman MAADI, Iranian actor, director

 


Payman Maadi was born in 1972 in New York City to an Iranian couple. His family moved back to Iran when he was five years old. He graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from Karaj Azad University. Maadi started his film career as a screenwriter in late 2000s. He is the writer of several famous Iranian films. He started his acting career in Asghar Farhadi\'s film DARBAREYE ELLY (ABOUT ELLY, 2009). Two years later, he received the Silver Bear award for Best Actor in Leading Role for his performance as Nader in Farhadi\'s JODAEIYE (A SEPERATION, 2011) from the Berlin International Film Festival. SNOW ON THE PINES (2013) is his debut fiction as director.

 

Sally POTTER, UK director

 


Sally Potter made her first 8mm film aged fourteen. She has since written and directed seven feature films, as well as many short films (including THRILLER and PLAY and a television series, and has directed opera and other live work. Her background is in choreography, music, performance art and experimental film. ORLANDO(1992), Sally Potter’s bold adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s classic novel, first brought her work to a wider audience. It was followed by THE TANGO LESSON(1996), THE MAN WHO CRIED(2000), YES(2004), RAGE (2009) and GINGER & ROSA (2012). Sally Potter is known for innovative form and risk-taking subject matter and has worked with many of the most notable cinema actors of our time. Sally Potter’s films have won over forty international awards and received two Academy award nominations. She has had full career retrospectives of her film and video work at the BFI Southbank, London, MoMA, New York, and the Cinematheque, Madrid. She was awarded an OBE in 2012. Her book Naked Cinema – Working with Actors is due for publication by Faber & Faber in March, 2014.

 

Lone SCHERFIG, Danish director, screenwriter

 


She has once been involved with the Dogme 95 movement and has been widely critically acclaimed by both the industry and audience for several of her movies. To name a few, AN EDUCATION was nominated for Best Director and Outstanding British Film at BAFTA Awards 2010 , as well as nominated for Audience Award Best Picture at European Film Awards in 2009. The film was also for three Academy Awards in 2010: Best Picture and Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for Nick Hornby, and Best Actress for Carey Mulligan. The film ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS has won the Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001. Her movies are generally romantic comedies, including Anne Hathaway starring film ONE DAY.
