Shanghai is to have its own film museum by the end of this year, officials said yesterday at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival.

Shen Yun, grand-daughter of famous Chinese playwright and screenwriter Xia Yan (whose original name was Shen Naixi) has donated Xia\'s books, scripts and letters to the planned Shanghai Film Museum.

Celebrated Chinese film director Wu Yigong donated the prize certificate of his film My Memories of Old Beijing, which won the Best Feature Film award at the Manila International Film Festival in 1983.

"Shanghai, the cradle of Chinese film, has made great contributions to the domestic film industry," said Ren Zhonglun, president of Shanghai Film Group Corporation. "It has been a dream of several generations of local film makers to build a film museum in the city."

The museum will be located on the original site of Shanghai Film Group Corporation in Xujiahui area and will be open to the public by the end of this year. It will feature exhibition areas covering 10,000 square meters, a 4D theater, multifunctional hall and film studios which will offer visitors the opportunity to simulate being a film director, an actor or a cameraman.

So far the museum has received more than 700 donated items from the public. Shanghai Film Group Corporation will also provide its collection for display, including 300,000 items related to Chinese cinema and world film history.

Many of the items will show the film achievements of Shanghai and unknown stories behind the Chinese film industry. They will be offered for education and academic research.
