Opening Film is Hollywood Hit Water for Elephants
The 14th SIFF will be open at 18:30 tonight in the Shanghai Grand Theatre. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendi Deng, Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon and fellow American screen actors Matt Dillon and Mischa Barton will be among the top-line guests. Over 300 international and local celebrities, filmmakers and about 500 media representatives from both home and abroad will attend the ceremony.
Renowned U.S. filmmaker Barry Levinson will chair the jury panel for the Golden Goblet Award and Shunji Iwai will lead the jury panel for the Asian New Talent Award. Water for Elephants, directed by Francis Lawrence and scripted from Sara Gruen\'s novel, will be the opening film.

Thailand Film Week will be held in China for the first time at the festival and superstars Pong and Bie will lead the Thai delegation along the red carpet. Popular Asian star Mario will attend the Thailand Film Week opening on June 12; a Japanese film delegation will attend Japan Film Week.

Casts from Chinese film dramas such as Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Hot Summer Day, Credit of Love, Qian Xuesen and The Revolution of 1911 will add more glamour to the red carpet. John Woo, Feng Xiaogang, Jackie Chan, Fan Bingbing, Li Bingbing, Jeon Ji-hyun, Cecilia Cheung, Xu Fan, Kitty Zhang, Lin Zhiling, Chen Kun and other guests will greet fans and the media.

It was directed by Francis Lawrence, who made Constantine and I Am Legend, in his distinctive style. Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon plays the beautiful circus star Marlena and talented heartthrob Robert Pattinson from "The Twilight Saga" plays her love Jacob.
The film portrays an epic romance set against the backdrop of Depression-era America. Jacob is a veterinary student who loses everything when his parents are killed in an accident. Destitute, he leaves town, gets a job taking care of the animals and falls for Marlena, the star attraction. But she is already married to August, the charming but abusive and volatile ring master (Christoph Waltz). Marlena and Jacob\'s relationship evolves as they bond over Rosie, an elephant brought in to revive the fortunes of the ailing circus.
