Screening of “Nose”: Leads the Audience to Explore the Art of Fragrance Making

"Making a fragrance that lasts for a long time is like composing a serenade." On June 17, the film "Nose" was screened at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival. The audience followed the footsteps of François Demachy, Dior's chief perfumer, in France, India, Italy, Madagascar and other countries to immerse in a piece of "serenade" of fragrance together.

"Nose" was shot by Clement Bovey and Arthur de Cshanson. According to reports, the filming of the work lasted two years. The film takes the personal experience of Dior's chief perfumer François Demachy as the main line, leading the audience from planting and picking to distillation and extraction to fully understand the whole process of perfume production and reveal the mystery of perfume production.

Perfume has a different meaning for François Demachy. In his opinion, a particular scent can evoke memories. A partner for many years said in the film that François Demachy will store photos, images, and smells in his own picture library. Whenever mentioning a specific picture, François Demachy approximately “outlined” and restored the situation in his mind, feeling the aroma of the moment. The audience also sighed with emotion: "Behind the fragrance, the meaning is extraordinary."

The hometown of François Demachy -Grasse, France is an important stop on his perfumery journey. Some of the Dior perfumes he created were born in the Fontaines Parfumées of the Creative Atelier in the Center of Grasse. Most of the flowers used in perfume extraction are also planted there. The audience followed the movie and "walked" together among the French flower fields.

Sustainable and organic are the "fragrance elements" that François Demachy is paying more and more attention to. In the film, participants in the perfume production process, including the growers of Chiba Rose and Orange Blossom, the head of Callion Gardens, and the workers of Robert's raw material processing plant, told their stories about organic flowers and natural fragrance.

From the production of raw materials to processing and extraction, every aspect of perfume production is very "exquisite." In an interview, the audience said that she was deeply impressed by one of the links: The staff of the raw material processing plant said that after the four tons of raw materials were screened, only three tons were left, and only three kilograms of raw materials could be extracted for perfume production. Every drop of fragrance source is precious."
