SIFF WORLD EXPRESS丨Peking Opera Blues 4K Restored Dolby Atmos Edition Premieres at Bologna’s Il Cinema Ritrovato
Following its world premiere during the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), the 4K restored Dolby Atmos edition of Peking Opera Blues graced the silver screen at Bologna’s Il Cinema Ritrovato on June 23, as part of the “Recovered & Restored” section. Due to overwhelming interest from industry professionals and local audiences alike, special encore screenings were offered on June 26 and July 2. The 4K restoration is jointly presented by SIFF and Bulgari, with the restoration work carried out by the renowned L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna.

The 4K restored Dolby Atmos edition of Peking Opera Blues was featured in a “Sotto le Stelle del Cinema (Cinema Under the Stars)” screening at the world-famous open-air venue, Piazza Maggiore.
Directed by Hong Kong auteur Hark Tsui, Peking Opera Blues is widely regarded as one of his crowning achievements, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of its original release. The film masterfully weaves together Peking opera aesthetics, national allegory, comedic action, and period reflection. Featuring Brigitte Lin, Cherie Chung, and Sally Yeh in stunning operatic makeup and costumes, the film captures the vibrant and glorious vibe of Hong Kong cinema’s golden age.
From its rapid-fire editing and dazzling choreography to the dynamic, opera-infused score by James Wong, Peking Opera Blues has long been celebrated for its exuberant cinematic flair since its release, solidifying its status as a timeless classic that transcends generations. During its 28th edition, SIFF joined forces with the Italian jeweler Bulgari on June 14 to host the film’s global premiere in its 4K restored Dolby Atmos format, a tribute to the aesthetic charm of Hong Kong cinema’s heyday, reawakening screen memories that span four decades.

The restoration team began with 4K scans of the original film elements, investing a total of 150 hours in frame-by-frame digital restoration, with an additional 50 hours dedicated to manually removing scratches, blemishes, flicker, and other signs of age. In the color-grading process, the original 35mm negative’s grain and texture were preserved while brightness, contrast, and color saturation were carefully adjusted to achieve greater stability and clarity, faithfully recapturing the authentic look of a classic Hong Kong production. For the soundtrack, the restoration aimed to restore the original audio’s depth, dynamics, and balance, recreating the distinctive soundscape of Hong Kong’s golden age. Based on the 5.1-channel mix preserved by Fortune Star, the audio was digitally restored and remixed, retaining the original sonic character while being completed in Dolby Atmos to revive the vivid and striking acoustic signature of that era.
The 4K restored Dolby Atmos edition of Peking Opera Blues stands as a landmark achievement in SIFF’s 4K Restoration program, as well as a compelling example of cross-disciplinary synergy between high jewelry craftsmanship, international restoration technology, and Chinese-language film heritage.

The section highlights state-of-the-art restoration techniques and cutting-edge achievements, not only preserving the original visual and emotional essence of each film but also reinterpreting classics through fresh perspectives, ensuring that invaluable cinematic heritage continues to thrive across the ages.
Founded in 1986 by the Cineteca di Bologna, Il Cinema Ritrovato is traditionally held from late June to early July each year. This year marks its 40th edition, running from June 20 to 28. The Cineteca di Bologna boasts an extensive archive of over 60,000 films, and its restoration laboratory, L’Immagine Ritrovata, is one of the world’s leading film restoration institutions. The festival itself is one of the most important global events for restored cinema, with its iconic screening venue, Piazza Maggiore, the main square in the heart of Bologna, transformed into a vast open-air theater during the festival, attracting between 3,000 and 7,000 spectators each night.
