Centered on Luiza, a schoolgirl navigating a turbulent period of her life, the Rio de Janeiro-set social drama delves into how the 15-year-old copes with her mother's mental illness, her own emerging artistic ambitions, and her first love.

Once plagued by the fear of sharing her mother's fate, she learns to embrace uncertainty and chart her own path forward.

When asked about the significance of the word "desert" in the title, director Alan Minas described it as "highly metaphorical and central to the film's thematic fabric."

Unlike its conventional definition as an inhospitable and desolate landscape, it functions in the film as a vivid embodiment of the sensory experiences of Luiza's mother, Minas added.

It may symbolize the protagonist's mother's anguish as she plunges into an abyss of imaginative madness, or represent her solace in a parallel spiritual realm where she balances pathology with survival.

Grounding this complex inner world into some form of reality is the protagonist Luiza, played by popular Brazilian actress Nina Prado.

Deeply moved by her character's unwavering determination, Prado expressed admiration for Luiza's resolve to restore her family's former happiness through sheer willpower.

However, she also acknowledged that playing the role posed significant challenges for her.

"Her family life is fraught with numerous difficulties, which poses a major hurdle," Prado said. "In addition, as a teenager, she also faces interpersonal interactions and conflicts with peers at school, which is another particularly challenging aspect to navigate."

Producer Daniela Vitorino emphasized that Luiza's resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity is exactly the kind of strength she hopes to convey to audiences.

"I hope viewers can draw a lesson from her experience: despite numerous difficulties, conflicts, and hardships, everything will eventually improve, and life always holds hope," she said.
