As a landmark masterpiece by director Tsui Hark, Peking Opera Blues has, since its release, left a vibrant and indelible mark on the history of Chinese-language cinema, celebrated for its rich Peking Opera-inspired aesthetics, exquisite costume textures and profound sense of national devotion, establishing itself as a cinematic treasure that transcends generations. Through the compelling performances of its three leading actresses, the film vividly embodies the courage, resilience, and unapologetic confidence of the "Daoma Dan" spirit in traditional Peking Opera. This inner strength resonates in harmony with Bvlgari's commitment to honoring extraordinary women. Marking the 40th anniversary of the film in 2026, the Roman Jeweler has collaborated with the SIFF to launch this significant restoration initiative. Guided by a continuous exploration of the dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic expressions, the Maison leverages contemporary technology to pay tribute to a silver-screen masterpiece, while drawing upon over a century of artisanal heritage to perpetuate cultural vitality. This initiative further testifies to the brand's long-standing dedication to global arts and cultural preservation, ensuring that this timeless classic continues to exude new life in the modern era.
The restoration was meticulously executed by L'Immagine Ritrovata. Based on the source film elements, the project involved a full 4K scan followed by 150 hours of frame-by-frame digital refinement. While faithfully preserving the original film grain and cinematic texture, the team expertly calibrated brightness, contrast, and color saturation to achieve a visual presentation that is stable, clear, and faithful to its original aesthetic. The audio restoration involved digital cleaning and remixing of the source soundtracks, culminating in a new Dolby Atmos version that retains the original sonic character. This process restored the depth, dynamics, and balance of the soundtrack, reviving the exuberant and vivid soundscape characteristic of the golden era of Hong Kong cinema.

The project was further elevated with the strong support of the SIFF. In a speech delivered prior to the opening of the forum, Ms. Chen Guo, Managing Director of Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center, remarked: "This year marks the sixth year of our partnership with Bvlgari. Together with L'Immagine Ritrovata, we have harnessed modern technology to bring Peking Opera Blues back to the big screen in stunning 4K Dolby Atmos. Our collaboration, however, goes beyond restoration. From film screenings to cultural exchanges, we are creating a platform for artistic dialogues. By safeguarding and revitalizing cinematic heritage, we hope to bring these classics to more audiences and inspire a lifelong love of film."

Mauro di Roberto, President of Bvlgari Greater China, reflected on the reasons behind supporting the restoration of Peking Opera Blues, underscoring the Maison’s enduring commitment to cinematic art and long-standing dedication to cultural legacy: "Bvlgari's connection with the world of cinema stretches back to the 1950s and 60s. In 2013, we supported the restoration of Cleopatra, and restoring a Chinese cinematic classic from forty years ago is very much in that same spirit—a reaffirmation of our belief in artistic excellence and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Our partnership with SIFF is built on a shared conviction that art and culture are worth protecting. We believe that restoring a film is no different from restoring a building or a piece of jewelry—it demands the same devotion to craft. Our commitment to cultural preservation also opens doors to a richer exchange between East and West, and allows us to forge a genuine and lasting bond with audiences here in China. Contemporary technology makes it possible to introduce these timeless works to a new generation of audiences, ensuring that a classic never truly fades."

He then spoke on the feminine spirit at the heart of the iconic film, noting its resonance with Bvlgari's brand proposition. "At Bvlgari, we have always celebrated women with the courage to define themselves. From Cleopatra to the screen legends of the 1960s and 70s, the empowerment of women is woven into the very DNA of our brand. Peking Opera Blues resonated with us because it captures that same spirit—the grit, the confidence, the generous heart of its female characters still rings true today. We support projects like this because we believe that spirit deserves to be kept alive, inspiring more people to be bold and true to themselves."
Looking back at the defining milestones of the past forty years, Andrew Wu, LVMH Greater China President, reflected on the significance of this partnership: "These four decades have been a remarkable journey of transformation. In 1986, the launch of China’s satellite communication network marked a monumental leap into the modern era. By 1991, Ms. Sally Yeh’s iconic anthem, Walk Gracefully Once, was captivating hearts all across the nation. In 1993, the Shanghai International Film Festival was born. For Bvlgari, our own story in China began in 2004, before we proudly joined the LVMH Group in 2011. These forty years have witnessed the vibrant evolution of different generations. This year, the restoration of Peking Opera Blues beautifully embodies the very soul of 'Guochao'—the proud celebration of Chinese heritage. Our collaboration with SIFF is more than a partnership; it is a profound cultural dialogue between East and West, shining a global spotlight on Chinese cinematic classics while allowing China to embrace world trends."

Reflecting on her leading role in the film, Ms. Sally Yeh shared her profound emotions upon witnessing the restored classic return to the big screen, and offered her perspective on female strength: "Four decades later, seeing this work restored and about to grace the screen once again leaves me deeply moved. Of all the roles in my career, this is the one that feels closest to who I really am. I truly believe that female strength is deeply rooted within. It weaves tenderness and love together with passion and resilience, sparking a spiritual power so vividly epitomized by the women in Peking Opera Blues. The beautiful world of Peking Opera in this film demanded true craftsmanship—it was a journey of constant refinement, not just to bring the director's vision to life, but to fulfill my own deepest aspirations. I sincerely hope that this revived classic will resonate with a new generation of audiences, allowing them to feel the enduring artistry and emotional richness of Chinese-language films while ensuring that this vibrant, uplifting feminine spirit continues to shine through time."

As the visionary force behind the continuation of this cinematic legacy, Mr. Davide Pozzi, Director of L'Immagine Ritrovata, remarked: "This restoration presented a dual challenge: to repair scratches and color degradation with contemporary technology, while preserving the film's unique Eastern opera aesthetic and the distinctive texture of 1980s Hong Kong cinema. By retaining the original film grain and cinematic texture, we meticulously calibrated brightness, contrast and color saturation to achieve a refined and stable visual experience, restoring the film's original appearance to the greatest extent. To me, shaping a culture or restoring a film requires the exact same spirit of craftsmanship as creating High Jewelry—it is a labor of love defined by artisanal mastery and a boundless passion for the arts."

Davide Pozzi, Director of L'Immagine Ritrovata
Bvlgari brand ambassador and young actor Mr. Leo Wu shared his personal bond with cinema, reflecting on the 4K restoration of Peking Opera Blues and the legacy of Chinese cinematic classics: "Films are like time capsules, bridging eras to convey the unique culture, humanity, and emotions of different generations. Peking Opera Blues tells a powerful story of women breaking barriers to realize their true worth—a testament to courage that deeply resonates with us today. As a young actor, I feel it is our duty to honor the cinematic treasures left by our predecessors, drawing wisdom and emotional depth from them as we strive to follow in their footsteps. The dedication of Bvlgari and SIFF to restoring these iconic films is incredibly empowering for the next generation of filmmakers, inspiring us to create stories that will truly stand the test of time."
