Golden Goblet Contender "The Miserable Mother" Blends Surrealism, Social Commentary
The cast of The Miserable Mother, a Golden Goblet Awards Main Competition nominee at the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, discussed the inspiration behind the film at a press conference on June 14.

Directed by Susanne Heinrich, it follows a young mother struggling under the pressure of a mortgage, caring for her newborn child, and dealing with an immature husband. It offers a sharp assessment of the challenges of modern parenthood and is the second installment in the director’s planned trilogy.
Blending elements of musical and theatrical performance with surreal and fantastical storytelling, the French-German co-production creates a distinctive and imaginative portrayal of its protagonist's struggles.
In discussing pre-planning for the film, Heinrich said the entire production team had devoted significant effort to designing the plot and constructing the sets.
"Before filming, we spent three months conducting various experiments to explore how to integrate music and dance into the film," she recalled. "Throughout the subsequent production process, many scenes and sets were also built entirely by ourselves."
Beyond the efforts of the production team, she emphasized that the actors’ performances also played a vital role in the successful completion of the film.
Given the film's extensive incorporation of musical elements, actors needed to deliver richer emotional expressions and more exaggerated physical movements, posing greater challenges for them. And they all contributed outstanding performances, she said.
Editor Clementine Decremps noted that she was impressed by the actors' on-set performances, which provided additional creative inspiration to her post-production work.
“Although I had thoroughly read the script before starting editing, I still went to the set a few days before production wrapped to experience it firsthand. This further deepened my appreciation for the film’s inventiveness and uniqueness,” Decremps said.
Adopting a tailored editing approach, she incorporated a variety of sound effects along with elements rich in irony and humor to elevate the film's overall impact.
Producer Jasper Wiedhoft also attended the meeting, sharing his expectations for the film.
"I hope this film will spark greater interest in the musical genre and pave the way for its more sustainable and widespread development in the film industry," he said.
