SIFF SCREENING | Warming Your Winter -Japanese Film Festival to Return with a Bang in Late December

Guided by Shanghai Film Bureau and specially curated by the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), the “Japanese Film Festival” will meet with film enthusiasts at three cinemas: the Grand Theatre, Tianshan Cinema - Wanping Theater, and Shanghai Film Art Center (SHO) over two weekends (December 20-22 and December 27-29).

Launched in 2017 to promote cultural exchange between China and Japan and enrich the cultural lives of citizens, Japanese Film Festival debuted with a lineup of popular new films that added a splash of light and shadows to the winter months. By 2020, this event had become an essential winter viewing activity for many cinephiles.

This year, under the eager anticipation of fans, Japanese Film Festival will make a heartfelt return. The films to be screened this time include award-winning titles that have garnered acclaim at international festivals, blockbuster adaptations of literature and anime, as well as remarkable works showcasing unique directorial styles. Notably, all the films are newly released or yet-to-be-released works from Japanese theaters this second half of the year, with the earliest having premiered in Japan just over three months ago.

A clever combination of traditional Japanese elements and modern illustration style, the specially designed main visual poster resonates with the warm winter atmosphere, highlighting the unique delicacy of Japanese cinema. Just like the captivating array of Japanese cultural scenes depicted in the poster, this edition of Japanese Film Festival will feature super-popular artists, standout newcomers, and familiar “faces” beloved by Shanghai film fans on the big screen. And we look forward to your presence.

The film showcase will be held at the Grand Theatre, Tianshan Cinema - Wanping Theater, and Shanghai Film Art Center (SHO) over the weekends of December 20-22 and December 27-29. Additionally, there will be surprise activities waiting to be unlocked on-site. Ticket sales are expected to start on December 12 (Thursday) at noon across all platforms, along with an online pre-sale of a wider range of merchandise.

The event is also expected to expand into the Yangtze River Delta region, with detailed information about the screened films to be revealed shortly. For details on film information, ticketing, and merchandise, please keep an eye on our subsequent updates.
