Jaeger-LeCoultre Joins the 25th SIFF to Support Chinese-language Cinema
On June 9, 2023, the Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre will join hands with Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) to renew the 12-year legend of film art. During the 25th SIFF, Jaeger-LeCoultre will host the world's first water curtain music show - The Reverso, present the Glory to the Filmmaker for this year, and take further its devotion into the development of Chinese-language cinema through the CLASSIC FILM RESTORATION programme.
To protect the legacy of the art of cinema
This year, celebrating the twelfth anniversary of the CLASSIC FILM RESTORATION programme, Jaeger-LeCoultre will continue its partnership with SIFF, which stems from Jaeger-LeCoultre Atelier d'Antoine's commitment to preserving historical heritage, to preserve the heritage of Chinese-language cinema art. In the exclusive restoration workshop of Jaeger-LeCoultre, master watchmakers revive antique timepieces that had faded away in the stream time. Similarly, a total of 16 Chinese-language films varied in eras and genres have been carefully preserved through the CLASSIC FILM RESTORATION programme, which spans some of the most influential works in Chinese-language cinema over the past century, including OUT OF THE WINDOW (1973) directed by Song Cunshou, SOUL OF A PAINTER (1994) directed by Huang Shuqin, FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI (1998) directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, and the classic NEW YEAR SACRIFICE (1956) directed by Sang Hu. The most recently restored film is EARLY SPRING (1963), a well-known work by the famous third-generation director Xie Tieli.
Sharing the cinema community's commitment to art and craftsmanship, Jaeger-LeCoultre has always valued the protection, preservation and inheritance of craftsmanship in multiple forms, and is proud to further its commitment to supporting outstanding Chinese-language filmmakers with exceptional creativity through the platform of SIFF. The prestigious "Glory to the Filmmaker" from Jaeger-LeCoultre, which honors Chinese-language filmmakers who have made remarkable contributions to the film industry, was presented at SIFF for the first time in 2018. This year, Jaeger-LeCoultre will once again work with SIFF to award this glory as homage to a leading figure of the Chinese-language cinema.
To pay tribute to the "Golden Ratio of 1.618 " with a brand-new music show
Jaeger-LeCoultre will pay tribute to the "Golden Ratio of 1.618", the figure that defines beauty and harmony, with a thematic event during SIFF. The "golden ratio" is also the underlying aesthetic that has shaped the Reverso collection's design since its inception in 1931. Inspired by the world's first drive-in cinema in the early 1930s, the specially curated Jaeger-LeCoultre Art Deco Cinema is a nod to the city of Shanghai, the birthplace of Chinese cinema.
The world's first water curtain music show - The Rerverso - will be the climax of the evening, with a spectacular sound and light show competing with the giant water curtain. The show will tell the legendary story of the "Golden Ratio" through four chapters, from the observation of nature, to the hunt for aesthetics, to the exquisite masterpieces created by human beings in tune with the "Golden Ratio", and finally to the Reverso watches that interpret this harmony.
