The 26th Shanghai International Film Festival announced its new cohort of SIFF YOUNG directors, producers and screenwriters on June 19.

Eight young and exceptional film professionals were chosen from a list of 60 candidates who were considered for this third batch of the annual industry honour.

Among them are directors Wei Shujun, Huo Meng, Zhao Ji, Jigme Trinley, Kong Dashan, producers Ying Luojia and Xie Meng, and scriptwriter Chen Shu.

Many of their diverse film productions have provided in-depth perspectives and insights into social change and ordinary people’s lives and emotions.

Famous Chinese filmmaker Guan Hu, chair of the recommendation panel, said that the talented filmmakers, and the incubation of their film projects, needed long-term support from veterans of the industry and policies.

“As new blood to Chinese cinema, they are contributing to the vitality and prosperity of the Chinese film market,” Guan added.

Wei Shujun, whose drama film “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is vying for Golden Goblet Awards at this year’s film fest, said that he loves Shanghai, and this industry recognition will encourage him to create more good films.

Director Zhao Ji said that he is very honoured and proud to receive the title of SIFF YOUNG director as an animation filmmaker.

“Shanghai has a glorious history of animation works and many directors are pursuing their animation dreams in the city,” Zhao added. “I will continue to make inspiring and heartwarming animated films.”
