SIFF EXPLORE | Instructor Lineup of SIFF EXPLORE Announced

 

The instructor line-up for SIFF EXPLORE of the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) was announced today. Tan Chui Mui, Malaysian director, screenwriter and producer, Dong Yue, Chinese screenwriter and director, Chen Liao Yu, Chinese animation director, Chen Shu, Chinese screenwriter; and Zhang Shuguang, Chief Operating Editor of MIGU (Shanghai) under China Mobile, have been selected as instructors for SIFF EXPLORE to guide the growth of new talents.

 

This year, SIFF EXPLORE has received a total of nearly 3,900 entries from China and the whole world. After selection by experts, the candidates for this session will be made public soon. And the instructors of this unit will review all the candidate works to shortlist 20 outstanding works. The creators of these 20 outstanding works will be invited to Shanghai in June to participate in official activities such as on-site promotion, instructor forum, exploration class, screening salon, award ceremony of Golden Goblet Awards and red-carpet ceremony during SIFF.

 

Tan Chui Mui

Malaysian director, screenwriter, producer and actress

 

In 2006, she directed her debut feature film LOVE CONQUERS ALL, which garnered the New Currents Award at the Busan International Film Festival and the National Society of Film Critics Award, as well as the Tiger Award at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2009, her short film EVERY DAY EVERY DAY won the highest honor at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival. She was once invited to the Cannes Festival Cinefondation Residence, and has also served as the instructor for many film workshops. In 2015, she initiated the Next New Wave, a film workshop for young Malaysian filmmakers. In 2017, she established the Asia South East Short Film Festival, focusing on showcasing short films from Southeast Asia. In 2021, her latest film, BARBARIAN INVASION, took the Jury Grand Prix prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival.

 

 

Dong Yue

Chinese screenwriter and director

 

Dong Yue’s representative work THE LOOMING STORM won the Award for Best Artistic Contribution at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2017; in 2018, he scooped the Best New Director honor at the 12th Asian Film Awards for this film, the Best Young Director Award at the 14th Changchun Film Festival China, and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 55th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival of Taiwan, China; in 2019, he was nominated for Best Director at the 32nd session of the Golden Rooster Awards.

 

 

Chen Liaoyu

Chinese animation director

 

Graduated from the Animation Program of Beijing Film Academy, Chen Liaoyu is the Associate Professor of Animation School of Beijing Film Academy. His animation works mainly include online animation works the BLACK BOX series and FEIWENJI , TV animation series GOOD HABITS OF THE DAY, FESTIVAL IN THE FLOUR TOWN, etc., and animated film FOODIVERSE, and animated short film collection YAO-CHINESE FOLKTALES and so on.

 

 

Chen Shu

Chinese screenwriter

 

Graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, Chen Shu has created works as a screenwriter such as MY SPECTACULAR THEATRE, BROTHERHOOD OF BLADES, CITIES IN LOVE, BROTHERHOOD OF BLADES II: THE INFERNAL BATTLEFIELD, DANCING ELEPHANT, and A WRITER'S ODYSSEY, etc.

 

 

Zhang Shuguang

Chief Operating Editor of MIGU (Shanghai) under China Mobile

 

Zhang Shuguang holds the degree of bachelor of laws in Economic Law from Department of Law, Beijing Business School . With 20 years of experience in Internet content operation and management, he was once the executive editor-in-chief of the People's Tribune of People's Daily and the deputy editor-in-chief of the Sina News Center with extensive experience in communication of news, information and hot spots, and has also served as the senior deputy editor-in-chief on well-known Internet video platforms such as Youku and LeEco.

 

 

This year, SIFF EXPLORE will be held from June 15 to 17. Developed around short film works, this unit serves as the first step of SIFF's "6+1" multistep new talent cultivation system; it will invite instructors to shed light on the creative path for new talents to explore and make breakthroughs; and it will keep discovering new talents and new works through the medium of short film works. And we’re looking forward to visioning the future in films of five minutes!

 

 

Since the establishment of SIFF EXPLORE in 2019, many instructors have joined us in this unit over the years, including: Sandra Ng, Chen Bolin, Mai Zi, Zhou Shengwei, Zhou Ziyang, Liu Kuo, Yuan Yuan, Li Meng, Ding Sheng, Cheng Teng, A Mei, Qi Xi, etc.
