French Film Masters Exhibition|The Films of Alain Resnais and François Truffaut to Show in Shanghai Next Weekend

To commemorate the 100th and 90th birthday of French film masters Alain Resnais and François Truffaut, respectively, “The Films of Alain Resnais and François Truffaut” exhibition, hosted by the Shanghai International Film & TV Festival under the direction of the Shanghai Film Bureau, will officially open next weekend. A total of ten films by the two masters will be screened in this exhibition, which will be held in Shanghai on the two weekends of December 17th and 18th and December 24th and 25th.

In 1956, Alain Resnais filmed the documentary short film "Night and Fog". In 1959, he completed his first feature film "Hiroshima mon amour". In the same year, François Truffaut made his feature film directorial debut, “The 400 Blows”, which opened the curtain of the French cinema’s New Wave, of which he later became a leader. He was good at combining his own experience with his films, which echoes what he once said, "All the films of a director are the chronicle of his life." Resnais, while also associated with the New Wave, was actually closer to the Left Bank group of French filmmakers. He explored literary film expression techniques and gradually developed his unique narrative style.

As we commemorate the two masters in 2022, SIFF has specially planned "The Films of Alain Resnais and François Truffaut" exhibition near the end of the year. Through the masterpieces of the two directors, it hopes to showcase the two facets of French cinema from the 1950s to the 1970s.

François Truffaut

This film exhibition will show Truffaut's "Five-film Series about Antoine" in its entirety, including “The 400 Blows”, which is known as the "pioneering work" of the New Wave movement; from Resnais’ films we have selected the short film “Night and Fog”, his first and second feature films “Hiroshima mon amour” and “Last Year at Marienbad”, a mid-career film starring the famous French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, “Stavisky”, and the masterpiece in his late years adapted from two plays “You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet!”. It is worth mentioning that nine of the ten films are brand-new digitally restored versions, of which seven are 4K restorations.

It is hoped that the exhibition can give the audiences an index to understand the two directors and the history of world cinema, further explore more about films, and keep reminding themselves, "You ain't seen nothin' yet!"
