Facing the grave pandemic, the film industry is in urgent need of long-lasting favorable conditions and environment to invigorate, cohere and inspire creation. At this Forum, leading figures in the sector of Chinese filmmaking are invited to discuss how to actively and effectively resume work, improve the quality of film production, and enhance the core competitiveness of the industry, thus contributing to a sound civilization foundation for the comprehensive construction of a moderately prosperous society.

Topic 2

Bearing in mind that "content is king", filmmakers are thus aimed at telling Chinese stories and lifting Chinese films from "plateau" to "peak". This Forum invites three established film directors to envision the future of film production in China.

Aron Warner | Renown Hollywood producer, producer of Wish Dragon. He was the vice president of production for Twentieth Century Fox and worked on films such as Independence Day, Volcano and Titanic. Aron Warne is currently working on a series of international films at Sony Pictures.

This Forum features representatives from noted film and TV production companies, copyright service institutions, as well as financial and legal sectors. Discussion will surround four topics: how copyright services support film and TV making and encourage original creation; promote production and storytelling; connect with finance and copyright transactions; extend authorization and seek cross-over development. It is hoped to help improve the public service platform for film and TV copyrights and transactions, and promote feasible financial solutions, so as to provide precise services for film and TV production companies.

JIA Zhang-Ke, Director, Producer and Writer.Born in 1970 in Fenyang, Shanxi, graduated from Beijing Film Academy. His directorial works include Xiao Wu (1998), Platform (2000), Unknown Pleasures (2002), The World (2004), Still Life (2006), 24 City (2008), I Wish I Knew (2010), Mountains May Depart (2015), Ash Is Purest White (2018), Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue (2020) and others.

SIFF MasterClass with James Schamus

James Schamus is an award-winning screenwriter (The Ice Storm), producer (Brokeback Mountain), and former CEO of Focus Features (Dallas Buyers Club, Lost in Translation, Milk, The Pianist).

His feature directorial debut, an adaptation of Philip Roth's Indignation, starring Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, and Tracy Letts, premiered at the 2016 Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, and was released by Roadside Attractions.

Schamus’New York based production company, Symbolic Exchange, in partnership with Beijing’s Meridian Entertainment, helped produce Kitty Green’s acclaimed feature documentary Casting JonBenet which had its world premiere at Sundance and launched on Netflix in 2017, and Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s A Prayer Before Dawn which premiered in Cannes 2017 and was released summer 2018 by A24. Recent projects include Rhys Ernst’s trans comedy Adam (starring Margaret Qualley), released by Wolfe Releasing summer 2019, and Noble Jones’s The Tomorrow Man (starring John Lithgow and Blythe Danner), which was released May 2019 by Bleecker Street. Both titles premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Symbolic also premiered Andrew Ahn’s feature Driveways (starring Hong Chau and the late Brian Dennehy) at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival, which was released by FilmRise in May 2020. Recently, the company produced Kitty Green’s latest feature The Assistant, which premiered at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival, and was released by Bleecker Street in January 2020.

He has also recently worked as a script consultant for Wuershan’s epic upcoming trilogy, Fengshen Bang. Schamus is Professor of Professional Practice in Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where he teaches film history and theory.

SIFF MasterClass with Olivier Assayas

Olivier Assayas, born in Paris on January 25th 1955 is the writer and director of some twenty features.

After studying art and literature, he made short films, wrote screenplays (notably for André Téchiné) and contributed film theory, journalism and criticism to French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.

His films have brought him international recognition, ever since his debut Disorder was awarded at the 1986 Venice Mostra.

He has also published various books dealing both with cinema and autobiography.
The most recent « Un Voyage – Marseille-Rio 1941 » resurrecting the war writings of his father and a series of missing photos of Germaine Krull is currently the subject of an exhibition at the prestigious Rencontres Photographiques d’Arles.

SIFF MasterClass with Naomi Kawase (Guest Speaker: BAI Baihe)

Naomi Kawase
Born and raised in Nara, Naomi Kawase graduated from Visual Arts Osaka in 1989. Her films, ‘Embracing’ and ‘KATATSUMORI’ received international recognitions and awards at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in 1995. With her first feature, SUZAKU (1997), she became the youngest filmmaker to receive the Camera d’Or at the Festival de Cannes with her. At the Festival de Cannes, she has also won the Grand Prix with The Mourning Forest /MOGARI (2007), the Carrosse d’Or in 2009, and also served as one of the jurors for the competition in 2013. In 2015, KAWASE was bestowed with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Minister of Culture. In 2017, “Hikari” (RADIANCE) was selected as one of the competition films and given Ecumenical Jury awards. She was appointed to direct the Official Film of the Olympics Game Tokyo 2020. Her latest film, ‘True Mothers’, was a Cannes 2020 Official Selection, and is scheduled to open in Japan on October 23 before its international release.

Aside from being a filmmaker, she is the founder and Executive Director for the Nara International Film Festival.

Chinese actress. She won the Huabiao Film Awards, Hundred Flowers Awards, Changchun Film Festival China, China Film Directors Guild, Beijing College Student Film Festival and other awards for Best Leading Actress. Her representative works include Love Is Not Blind, Monster Hunt and Go Away, Mr Tumor, Chongqing Hot Pot, Women on The Verge, A City Called Macau and so on. In addition to her acting career, Bai has also founded the radio program Her, acting as a host and producer, discussing topics on women. Bai has also joined the world tour as the lead actress of the Jonathan Lee Musical.

SIFF MasterClass with Lav Diaz

Lav Diaz is a Filipino filmmaker.He is known as one of the key members of the slow cinema movement, having made several of the longest narrative films on record.Diaz attractedworld-wide attention withis 2013 film Norte,the End of History, which was entered into the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent films have received much critical acclaim and many awards, with 2014's From What Is Before earning him the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival, 2016’s A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery competing for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and winning the Alfred Bauer Prize, and 2016's The Woman Who Left winning the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.

Denis Villeneuve is an Academy Award®-nominated French Canadian filmmaker best known for having directed BLADE RUNNER 2049, ARRIVAL, SICARIO, PRISONERS and INCENDIES. Villeneuve is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated film adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel, DUNE. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.

SIFF MasterClass with Hirokazu Koreeda

Hirokazu Kore-eda is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. He began his career in television and has since directed more than a dozen feature films, including Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and After the Storm. He won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for Like Father, Like Son and won the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters.
