Coming Soon | Golden Goblet Award – Best Animation Film RIDE YOUR WAVE Welcomes Public Release in Ch
The Japanese film RIDE YOUR WAVE, winner of the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film, recently announced that it is to be released across Mainland of China on December 7. Directed by Masaaki YUASA, and starring Ryota KATAYOSE and Rina KAWAEI, the movie tells a story about the sea, romance and growth, ready to bring Chinese viewers warm summer and love in the freezing season.
This June, RIDE YOUR WAVE was screened at SIFF on the same day as its theatrical release in Japan. It was one of the most popular films during the panorama, as it tickets for all four sessions were soon sold out after the box office opened.
Here is the plot outline: The girl Hinako MUKAIMIZU moves to an oceanside town to attend college and indulge in her hobby, surfing. When her new apartment catches on fire, she is rescued by Minato HINAGESHI, a firefighter with a strong sense of justice. Hinako is drawn to his dependable personality, and they bond when he begins learning how to surf. As the two spend time together, they fall in love; however, when Minato goes surfing during a storm, he drowns while rescuing a person. Hinako is distraught with his death, but one day, she finds out that he appears in water whenever she sings the song the two of them often sang together. Initially happy she can see him again, Hinako finds it hard to move on with her life as her reliance on his soul grows.
The director Masaaki YUASA enjoys high reputation and wide popularity across the anime community for his wild and free style. Born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1965, he is now an animation director, screenwriter, designer, and producer. Starting from 1990, he participated in the creation of the magna series CHIBI MARUKO-CHAN and CRAYON SHIN-CHAN (movie). He independently directed his first animated film MIND GAME in 2004, followed by KEMONOZUME and THE TATAMI GALAXY. In 2017, his work LU OVER THE WALL won the Cristal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival; in the same year, his NIGHT IS SHORT, WALK ON GIRL was honored the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
In recent years, Yuasa Masahiro has maintained active in creation. In the spring of 2017, his two animated feature films: LU OVER THE WALL and NIGHT IS SHORT, WALK ON GIRL were released at the same time. The former was nominated for Best Animation Film under the Golden Goblet Awards at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival. This year, his new film RIDE YOUR WAVE was shortlisted again, and finally won the favor of the jury and took the trophy of Best Animation Film.
The leading characters in RIDE YOUR WAVE were played by Japanese popular actor and actress Ryota KATAYOSE and Rina KAWAEI. At the SIFF this year, Ryota KATAYOSE showed up during the post-screen event of the film and also attended the awarding ceremony, where he received the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film on behalf of the director Masaaki YUASA.
