On the afternoon of June 21, the "Shanghai-Hong Kong Film Cooperation and Exchange Forum" was held which was sponsored by SIFFORUM of the Shanghai International Film Festival and co-sponsored by Yiyuguancha.

Director and screenwriter Felix Chong, supervisor Stephen Lam Bing-Kwan, Ren Zhonglun, chairman of Shanghai Film Group Co., Ltd. and chairman of Shanghai Film Co., Ltd., and Wei Xiangdong, executive director of Banana Pictures attended the forum. Documentary director Wei Junzi was invited to host the forum, together with the guests, they discussed how to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Shanghai and Hong Kong outstanding filmmakers, promote the sharing of resources and complementary advantages in the Shanghai and Hong Kong film and television industry, and promote the further upgrading of Shanghai and Hong Kong film and television cooperation.

From Concept Enlightenment to Commercialization Promotion

From Ann Hui's AFFAIR OF HALF A LIFETIME, Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang's EVERLASTING REGRET to Karwai Wong's 2046, many Hong Kong films were marked by Shanghai culture. Shanghai dialect, cheongsam, old foreign-style house, symphony, etc. constitute the typical Shanghai memories in Hong Kong films.

Reviewing some cases of Shanghai-Hong Kong film cooperation, Ren Zhonglun said that Shanghai-Hong Kong film cooperation is now interwoven with each other.

He pointed out that from the perspective of Chinese films in the past ten years, what Hong Kong films have brought the greatest benefits to mainland films are the rules, procedures and norms of industrialization. "The first few years were enlightenments, and the last few years focused on promoting, commercialized thinking and commercial performance."

Talking about the feeling of cooperation in recent years, Felix Chong said that one of the great feelings of contacting the mainland market was to see a broader and more diversified market. Stephen Lam Bing-Kwan further pointed out that with the strong Chinese film market, there will be more opportunities for co-production with the mainland than before, and meanwhile there is still room for further deepening.

Wei Xiangdong said that film directing is an artistic creation, but it is also a technical work, requiring experienced processes. Hong Kong filmmakers cooperate and perform their duties in various types of work. This is the inspiration brought by the craftsmanship of Hong Kong film industrialization to the young creator team.

Policy Bonus, Diversification of Types

Ren Zhonglun believed that the creators of Shanghai and Hong Kong films have reached a new stage after years of mutual integration. The future cooperation between Shanghai and Hong Kong films is not limited to only a few types of themes, but is completely diversified and open.

Ren Zhonglun also pointed out that the National Film Board's policy of supporting the further development of Hong Kong and Macao film industries in the mainland, introduced in April, is contribute to deeper and more comprehensive cooperation. In the process of developing from a big movie country to a powerful movie country, more Chinese filmmakers need to unite. The experience of Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation can be used as a reference for movie cooperation in all regions of Chinese.

Felix Chong said that the more open the policy is, the better the effect will be on the embodiment of creativity. From the perspective of the overseas development of Hong Kong's film industry, it is also contribute to enhancing the global competitiveness of Chinese films.

As an important part of the Shanghai International Film Festival, the SIFFORUM will be held from June 16th to 21st, with 10 forums and 4 Film Class activities. The 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival will take the theme of tribute for 70th anniversary of the foundation of new China and of promoting China to transit from a big film country to a powerful film country, deepen into all aspects of the film industry, focus on topics such as film industrialization, industrial chain, science-fiction films, film education, mainstream film innovation and other topics for wisdom collision. In the meanwhile, it also takes the deep and proper implementation of "Belt and Road" film exchange and the presentation of film art as major directions, fully demonstrates the vitality of Chinese films, fully implements the platform mission, and helps Chinese films to march toward a better future.
