Directors promote TV's role in shaping future society

By Liza Li

TV station directors from around China shared insights on how mainstream media could help influence the future shape of society at Shanghai TV Festival's first summit yesterday.

There was consensus among them that mainstream media should take the lead by showing quality content and telling touching stories about ordinary people.

Zhang Hongsen, deputy director of State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), gave a keynote speech on how television stations should boost their strengths in communicating, guiding and influencing the public innovatively.

“We should all explore and innovate in news and propaganda as well as literary and artistic creations, constantly offering excellent news and programs with indepth thinking that can also bring cultural enjoyment to the public," Zhang said.

“A lot of Chinese program formats, animated films and TV series, documentaries and more are loved by audiences and have entered the international market. They are also key forces in demonstrating Chinese values.”

As the overall environment undergoes profound change, he said, TV networks are facing new challenges in maintaining the power of speech. The requirements of offering multi- level, multi- cultural content are also much higher.

“The application of new generation technologies will help the integration and upgrading of TV networks, advance the construction of intelligent, convergence media and push forward the development of HDTV and Ultra HDTV,”said Zhang.

Peng Jianming, deputy editor-in-chief of CCTV, said TV stations should maintain an artisan spirit in producing excellent new programs, spare no effort in doing foundational research and ensuring that subject focus and artistic expression are of the highest quality.

“We should express the history and focus on the reality," Peng said. "There should be good stories and characters in addition to mastering the themes and values. “Real life topics will always be about people," he added. "They are not abstract images but individuals with emotions, dreams and struggles. It's our duty to show the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.”

Gao Yunfei, director of Shanghai Media Group, noted that mainstream media can succeed by setting out the reality and focusing on people.

“We should be expressing the themes of our time and focusing on realistic topics and everyday life," he said. "It’ s important to tell Chinese stories and spread the Chinese spirit while adhering to innovation in creating original TV programs to boost cultural confidence,”Gao added.
