The major creative forces behind the Golden Goblet-nominated movie "The Conformist" yesterday gave credit for the movie to its talented and devoted actors.

Director Cai Shang-Jun and screenwriter Gu Zheng were talking at a press conference after the film's first screening at Shanghai International Film Festival.

"The Conformist" was mostly filmed along the border between Russia and China during the ice-cold months of November and December. Cai said that performing in temperatures around -30℃ called for a lot of dedication and commitment from the actors to craft a screen character.

Cai praised Huang Bo, who plays one of the main characters, as one of China’s best male actors and perfect for the role.

Cai and screenwriter Gu reverted to spiritual explanations when asked about the themes they were trying to convey in their crime genre movie.

Human existence relies on its spirit, and there is a beam of light that allows the spirit to show, they agreed. "The Conformist" is about this beam of light and how easily it can darken.

The movie will certainly kindle many thoughts among viewers. Its final scene involving a tiger was explained by Cai as one that has "infinite meaning."

"The Conformist" will be screened in theaters around China within the next two months and audiences will be able to make up their own minds about its spiritual tones.
