About International Student Shorts Award

International Student Shorts Award was introduced since the 9th SIFF in 2006, as a stage for the young people to communicate with renowned film masters and to display their works. It is one of the three grand awards of Shanghai International Film Festival, together with Golden Goblet Award and Asian New Talent Award, by which more and more students approach to the world film industry.

In 2007, the winner of “Best Creative Idea”, Zhang Zhonghua finally received financial investment of RMB 3,000,000 to his first feature film, besides the award prize offered by the festival. Another nominee, Huang Kai from the School of Film and TV Art & Technology of Shanghai University, made his debut Shanghai Park in 2008, which participated in the “Perspective” section of the Moscow International Film Festival 2008.

In 2008, the nominee Baek Seung-Hoon from South Korea was financed by Jia Zhangke’s new-director plan, to make his debut comedy Flying Duck. The film will be led by Chinese actress Ni Hongjie and Korean actor Choi Joon-Suk.

As a co-organizer, the Bureau of Shanghai Expo gives full support to this progaramme. With “Better City,Better Life” as the essential theme, in 2009 there are 655 shorts from 47 countries and regions submitted to the International Student Shorts Award, displaying various stories that happened in the cities around the world. Commissioned by the Organizing Committee of SIFF, the School of Film and TV Art & Technology of Shanghai University and Beijing Film Academy have executed this competition section for three years.

To achieve the open and equal competition rules, the Organizing Committee will invite professional jury team, consisting of film masters and industrial people to select the winners. In the two competition sections: Give me 5 and International Competition, the awarding categories are Best Film, Best Director, Best Creative Idea, Best Animation, Special Jury Award and “Give me 5-Golden Creation” and “Give me 5-Super Short”. The awarded filmmakers will receive a cash prize and award certificate issued by both the Organizing Committee of SIFF and the Bureau of Shanghai Expo.
