The 1st SIFF
The 1st Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) was held in Shangha from October 7 to October 14, 1993. Shanghai Film Art Center was selected to be the main venue. Eight cinemas including Grand Theater were designated to be the auxiliary venues. The international jury composed of XIE Jin (China), Oliver Stone (U.S.A.), Nagisa Oshima (Japan), TSUI Hark (Hong Kong, China), Paul Cox (Australia), Karen Shakhanazarov (Russia) and Hector Babenco (Brazil) voted out four "Golden Cup Award" winners and one Special Jury Award among 19 competitive entries. 167 films from 33 countries participated in competition and panorama. 300,000 audience attended the screenings and jury members' retrospectives. 16 domestic and foreign companies rented booths in the International Film Market and the transactions totaled 27 million RMB. About 200 Chinese and foreign journalists made reports about the Festival. The 1st SIFF was so successful that FIAPF recognized it as one of the nine largest international film festivals in the world since then.
The 2nd SIFF
The 2nd Shanghai International Film Festival was held for ten days from October 28 to November 2, 1995. 232 films from 46 countries and regions participated in the Festival. Among them, 19 titles were officially selected for competition. The international jury was composed of seven film people: SUN Daolin (China), Hsing LEE (Taiwan, China), Jacqueline Andere (Mexico), Jean Becker (France), Krzysztof Zanussi (Poland), Manfred Durniok (Germany) and Stanislav Rostotsky (Russia). The Festival founded the "Henessy Cup" Most Creative Film Competition for 300 Chinese and foreign journalists to vote out their favorite. 776 screenings were organized in 10 cinemas with 14 screens. Within the 10-day festival, almost 300,000 audience attended the screenings and the average seating rate was higher than 50%. In addition to the activities of the 1st SIFF, an international film academic seminar was newly organized. Since it was the centennial anniversary of world film and 90 anniversary of Chinese film in 1995, souvenirs such as stamps ("90 Anniversary of Chinese Film") and "Chinese Cinematographic Encyclopedia" were circulated. The enlarged International Film Market was participated by 22 Chinese and foreign film institutions .
The 3rd SIFF
The 3rd Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) was held in Shanghai from October 24 to December 2,1997, which consisted of four major activities: Golden Cup International Film Competition, International Film Panorama, International Film and TV Market and Retrospectives with Seminar. About 300 films from 44 countries attended Shanghai International Film Festival. International jury was composed of Shi Fang Yu (China), MATSUZAKA Keiko (Japan), IM Kwon Taek (Korea), Elem KLIMOV (Russia), Mark RYDELL (U.S.A), lstvan SZABO (Hungary) and NG See Yuen (Hong kong)."THE WOODLANDERS "(U.K) won the "Golden Cup Award". The three days' International Film & TV Market attracted over 30 companies from home and abroad. At the same time, lots of special activitieswere warmly welcomed by festival guests.
The 4th SIFF
The 4th Shanghai International Film Festival was held from Oct 22-31, 1999 in Shanghai, which consisted of four major activities: Golden Cup International Film Competition, International Film Panorama, International Film and TV Market and Retrospectives with Seminar. Among the 388 entries, 228 films from 37 countries and regions were screened when electric screen was used the first time for English subsitling. The three days' International Film & TV Market attracted over 30 companies from home and abroad. At the same time, lots of special activities, such as Authur Cohn Day, Retrospectives of International Juries, Filmmakers' Sodality (50 Anniversary for Shanghai Film Studio) were warmly welcomed by festival guests.
The 5th SIFF
The 5th Shanghai International Film Festival took place successfully from June 9 to 17, 2001 in Shanghai. There were about 874 film professionals from 359 companies of 46 countries participated the event and 164 films were screened, including 46 Chinese films. 479 screenings were hold in 9 cinemas with a total audience of 170,000.
14 films from 12 countries were selected into the "Jin Jue" Cup international film competition and the result is: Best Film Antitrust (U.S.A), Best Director Peter Howitt (American film Antitrust), Best Actor Daniel Auteuil (French film The Closet), Best Actress Peng Yu (Chinese film The Full Moon) and Stanilawa Celinska (Polish film Money is not Everything), Best Technology Michale Ballhans (American film The Legend of Bagger Vance) and Best Music Clande Samard (Uzbekistan film Bo Ba Bu).
